It used to be that BMW had a simple product lineup. Heck, ten years ago BMW never sold a sport utility vehicle. But times have changed, and the latest rumors out of Germany indicate the X1 isn’t the only compact Bimmer crossover headed for production. As it turns out, BMW is purportedly planning a “coupe” version of the X1 in the form of the X2 Sport Activity Vehicle.


Just as the X6 is the “SAV” version of the X5, the X2 will be the X1’s fun-loving sibling. But there’s a slight twist: the X2 will also lose two doors, making it a truer ‘crossover coupe’ than the X6. With Audi’s Q3 rumored to have a three-door configuration, the X2 might end up being its nearest rival.

The rumors began appearing in the German press this week, with Autobild Allrad reporting the story in its August issue.

Specific details regarding powertrains and availability remain unclear. The most likely scenario is BMW will borrow engines and transmissions from the 1-Series lineup. The X1 is expected to hit the market in 2010 with full time all-wheel drive, and the X2 could follow within the year. The overall size of both vehicles is said to be comparable to the Toyota RAV4.

If you look closely at the image you can see some abbrieviated lines that will appear on the incoming X1 for example the rear lights and how the tailgate slopes further.

Your best impression for the X1 is not at the underwheeled prototypes driving about just now but if you look at Nissan's Quashqai all taut and chunky and then you can mental image an opinion of the X1 and what the final vehicle will be like, Whilst the X1 will be dynamically perfect BMW are pitching this as an urban BMW Sport Activity Vehicle.

Whereas the press and traditionalists did not "go" for the original XCoupe Concept car . The ideas and inspiration and DNA are very much so embalmed in the X1/X2 projects. The XCoupe always had a future even if the media decided otherwise.

just came back from my 2 day trip to munich(and from my visit to the bmw museum). after seeing the Xcoupé in real life, i finally understand it. pictures didn't explain that vehicle.if the X2 is just alittle close to that car - even only in terms of proportions, then you have another future bmw design icon.

Love the way BMW is going. Another SUV. Let's see X1, X2, X3, Possible X4, X5, X6. I like to know the average weight(and co2 emission) in bmw fleet after all this suv are out.

When you lok atthe pictures shown on carmagazine, there are confusing X1 E84 and X3 F25.

aren't those two spyshots just the X1 and X3 ? both cars are very similar, the roof sloop and the wheel base reveal the difference truth.
wouldn't it be alittle too early for X2 spyshots?
