Preview: 2009 Audi A7 Cabriolet


Audi is determined to eclipse its main rivals in the sales race and will be releasing an onslaught of all-new models in an effort to become top dog. The carmaker has already revealed its new A5 and S5 coupes, and just around the corner is the new Q5 soft-roader and the next A4, but the big-ticket item is the new A7 model that will go head-to-head with the stylish CLS from Mercedes Benz. The Audi A7 will initially be offered as a four-door coupe that’s scheduled to go on sale in early 2009, but a cabriolet variant is expected to join the lineup towards the end of that same year.

These latest renderings compiled from sources close to Audi reveal that the new cabriolet will likely feature a conventional soft-top roof in order to preserve the car’s sleek profile and save trunk space. Some unique styling features that could be implemented include hidden rear door handles, LED lighting and a pillar-less glasshouse. Apart from Audi, other manufacturers including BMW, Jaguar and Volkswagen will be releasing their own sedans with coupe-like styling.
The A7 will be positioned above the A6 sedan and will be based on the new extended platform that will be used for the A8 limo. The large car wheelbase will ensure that rear passengers have adequate space, and should provide levels of comfort and dynamics similar to the more premium A8. The flexible architecture is the same design used for the new A5 coupe, and it will eventually spawn several key models for Audi including the next generation A4, A6, A8 and Q5 line of cars. This means that the A7 will also benefit from the relocated engine and transmission positioned close to the firewall to improve weight distribution and balance.
The expected engine offerings will include several gasoline and TDI powerplants, kicking off with a 3.2L gasoline V6 and moving up to the Lamborghini-derived V10 unit reserved for a potent S7 model. The range topping sports version should also pick up the new magnetic-ride suspension and quattro AWD as standard.

According to AutoBild Audi A7 four door coupe will enter production in 2010 and will be followed by the RS7 which will have no less than 600 hp.

Sorry daddy but that's not enough for me. The head lights are too sterile. Audi needs to go bananas with this car, the head lights need to curve and it should be as striking like an Audi TT.
I don't like the rear-end, it looks cut off, like a woman with no butt!

Not the prettiest car in those Huckfeldt CGIs. The front has potential though except for those orange eye brows. The windowline is too MBish. The rear needs a lot of improvement. Seems like there are some kind of gaps below the outernmost parts of the rear lights. Also the area around the license plate looks cramped.

Fresh new renderings of the upcoming Audi A7 have come out. The 2+2 seater, four-door coupe, which will be ready for production in 2009, is already testing, hidden under thick plastic as a mule.

Several models, as per Audi model pyramid, will go under the name A7. The most obvious of them are V6 petrol and diesel offerings, ranging from a 3.2-litre 200kW/268 bhp up to a storming 5.0-litre bi-turbo V10 of some 426kW/570 bhp. A surprise package will be the 368kW/ 493 bhp V12 TDI, which is already testing in the R 8 and is being eyed for inclusion as the flagship engine for the Q7 SUV.

Both front-wheel-drive and Quattro will be on offer, the latter on a 60:40 rear-biased split for the extreme-performance models such as the RS 7. The car will share its underpinnings with the next A6, although it will slot in slightly higher than the five-seater, but below the A8, as WCF has repeatedly reported.

The A7 could make its debut at the New York International Auto Show from March 21 – 30, 2008. This makes sense since Audi, like everyone else, is gunning for the US market in a big way, and as our renderings clearly show, the low-slung roofline should be a hit among Americans. The most recent hit car, at the time, to offer such a roof design was the Chrysler 300C and to good effect.

I had anticipated the A7 to be a large coupe but apparently it's going to go head to head with the CLS in size, and most likely in price as well.

The gear lever is covered up in the same style similar to the Panamera and 997TT so I guess it's rocking DSG.

Yupp. Quite a mix, and the reason for using the A8 center console is because it's more advanced than the A6 interior. The divider between the seats is perfect for hiding the electronics for the DSG tranny.

in the interior shot, i notice the different instrument gauge and climate control unit. i like how things are laid out in the current a8 and would like to see more of that in audi's line up, just hope the a7's interior won't be too similar to that of a8's tho.

Hopefully Audi will give this one some real spice and not just make it a clone of everything else they make. Even typically great styling needs an update sooner or later.

I'm not sure - I think the interior shot is from a different car. Look at the side picture of the A6 mule. You can see the standard A6 chrome ringed passenger door handle high up on the door, but the interior picture shows a non-chrome outlined door handle much lower down, as on the A8. Perhaps the A7 running gear is being tested in A6 and A8 mules?

Don't expected anything out of the ordinary because Audi has, using a sketch, illustrated that the car will feature the typical flavor of Audi tail lights.

I also saw something . If you look at the side mirror on the interior picture, you can see the part of a LED turn signal light on the mirror. All Audis that have turn signals in side mirrors have that. The A6 mule does not have turn signals built in a side mirror.

You might be right. There is also a big metallic/chrome strip above the door handle in the interior shot which would probably be visible in the other shot if they were the same car.
