You are probably right about being necessary, but it's all about competition and this elevates the GL to the top of the heap. Reaction on another forum has been very positive with some 450 owners wanting to replace their grilles with the 550 model...:-)

That new grill gives the GL so much presence, not that it was lacking in it before hand!

I wonder if it's only for the American market or will Europe get it as well?

From what I understand it will only be available in the US and Canada.

It may not be obvious but there is additional fender flare and the skid pads are different.

Yes on the front windows. The '08 GL550 in the US does not have the IR Glass but has the Blue Glass. The Privacy Glass is BlueGlass with the dark tint on the rear windows. So I had the two front windows tinted with a good IR/UV medium tint film and the windshield with a glare resistant IR/UV almost clear tint film. It looks a little darker than it really is.

The '09's are scheduled to have the IR Glass all around.

It's sad that the 420 CDI and 500, here in germany, isn't available with this "special" 550 equipement.

I wonder if it is going to be a second generation of this car. It is a big mistake to me, at least where I live I don´t see any of them.

They are really popular here in the States. I see them everyday, usually the GL320 CDI. It sells much better than any of its competitors (Cadillac Escalade, Audi Q7, Toyota Landcruiser, etc). They will make definately make a second Generation. There not sore losers like Lexus.

I see at least 5 a day here in Miami of not more. Extremely popular SUVs.
