New pictures: Lexus LF-H spied

The Lexus LF-A concept car has made a public appearance at the Tokyo Motor Show and elsewhere. However, while the shiny display model was on the Lexus stand, a black-clad prototype has been in testing since April.

These latest photos show engineers putting the car through the paces at Germany's Nurburgring circuit. The car's complete roofline is now visible, and we expect more camo will be dropped in the coming months.

Toyota officials let slip in Tokyo that the production car, likely to be called the LF-H, is going to have a V10 engine, developed from the engines in Toyota's F1 cars, which is thought to develop over 500 hp. Although the engine is front- rather than mid-mounted, the LF-H will be rear-wheel drive, and Lexus has promised "the ultimate weight balance," "extravagant comfort" and "precision operation." The LF-H hasn't yet been confirmed for production, but the continued and sustained testing of prototypes suggests that it's a pretty definite contender.

Report: Toyota to revive Supra with hybrid sports car

Japan's No. 1 automaker is planning a Toyota-branded version of forthcoming Lexus LF-A supercar (pictured) as a successor to the popular Supra sports car, according to a new report by the U.K.'s AutoExpress magazine. The car will reportedly feature a modified version of the 341 horsepower 3.5-liter V6 hybrid found in the Lexus GS450h.

The rumors directly contradict a report from August by trade publication Automotive News indicating there would be no successor to the Supra. At the time, the news organization said "all the rumors of the two-passenger sports car's return are false."

The AE report does not specifically say if the car will use the Supra nameplate, but it suggests a concept will appear at the Detroit auto show in January. In late August, Autocar said Toyota would build a hybrid version of the LF-A in addition to the widely expected V10 model.

Re: Spy Pics: Lexus LF-H

by the looks of it I would think it was a Infinit g35 coupe competitor, but I guess it's whats underneath that matters.

Nonetheless looks pretty nice and sporty, where is BMW and MB??

MB gave us the SLR a few years ago and doesn't unlike Audi and Lexus, have anything to prove.
Either way I'm really curious to see what Lexus has planned for us. I hope that the car won't have the same head lights as the concept. I don't like them at all.

The SLR was also way more expensive, about $350K more than the R8, I thought this Lexus was in the same range as the R8, an attainable supercar of sorts.

Still the SLR, LF-F and the R8 have been manufacturered for the same purpose, which is to strenghten the brands' identities, rather then conquer track. Though I do hope that MB hasn't canned the P8 project.

Re: Spy Pics: Lexus LF-H

You're right Lu. All these cars are built to produce headlines and elevate a brand's identity. Lexus, despite its rock-solid position in the US, is a brand completely bereft of excitement. At the moment, they lack a proper coupe, they lack "tuner trim" cars (like M, AMG) and they also lack a halo car.

Assuming that the LF-H follows the release of the IS500 (working name), they should be on the right track.

Lexus still has alot of holes to fill, and they're not without their vulnerabilities. For starters - their biggest selling model is the RX SUV, and roughly half of their sales are SUVs. Unlike the German brands, Lexus isn't rooted in the fundamentals like their rivals. They need to gain "car credibility" and a halo car is an important ingredient.

I don't really see the urgent need for BMW to throw their hat into the supercar arena. They've been spoiling us with wave after wave of new product over the past 5 years, fleshing out what was once a pretty scarcely populated lineup. Just think - back in 2001 we didn't have the 1er, the X3 or the 6er. They're all new kids on the block. In addition, we have the new 3er coupe and X5 to chew on.

When or if BMW joins the party it will be an elective activity, since their image is nearly without peer at the moment.

Lexus, on the other hand, is looking pretty dry for the next few years. The IS, GS, ES and LS are have all been unleashed, and the "get excited factor" already feels as though its petering-out. This supercar is timed right to keep us excited while their staple products run through their midlife.

Yepp, Lexus pretty much has diarea right now. They are just coming out with car after car after car without thinking carefully about what sort of brand identity they want to establish and what they are actually offering. That is exactly the reason why the LF-H won't do they much good beacause when it brings people into Lexus dealers, people will probably leave the faster then borat can say Kazakstan.
BMW on the other hand don't need to such about with a batmobile look-a-like car. Their brand is so strong that the distinctive design of their cars and the driving pleasure is more then enough for them to be able to stand strong. More over the M3 and M5 are almost icons in the automotive world. That alone is something to be proud of.

Nah, it'll look better than that... I think the gist is right, but the details will be a whole lot better. In particular, we can expect the front to look much more sculpted, like the new IS and LS.
