AutoWeek - 2008 Jaguar XJR Supercharged (short drive)

The supercharged Jaguar XJR is fast, and smooth.

OUR TAKE: One can forget how special the Jaguar XJR is, but not for long. Punch the throttle: instant, refined, supercharged response. Tap the brakes: immediate, smooth reaction. Dial in a bit of steering input: course changed.

It's a tried and true formula--tossing a supercharger on the already strong dohc V8, punching up the suspension, adding some stickier rubber--but the difference remains that the underlying hardware this time around is the lightweight and extremely stiff aluminum body and chassis of the new XJ. That makes all the difference when it comes to confidently driving the XJR hard. For a big luxury liner--dare we say, an "old man's car"?--the XJR seems to relish and reward tail-wagging naughtiness, pushing past posted speeds, and rowing through the elegant J-gated automatic gearbox for the right ratio to match the roadway.

And when you decide to just relax and blend in with traffic--maybe with the new active cruise control engaged--all that Jag luxury is there to pamper. Aside from the undeniable Jaguar-ness of the car, the XJR remains understated.
