AutoZeitung: 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG vs 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo

I found this while searching AutoZeitung; I do not speak German; so I put it through Google Translate; here is the translated version, though some of it comes out strange.

At the IAA 2009, the two super sports car, Mercedes AMG and Porsche 911 Turbo SLS counted all the highlights. The AUTO ZEITUNG has compared the two new super sports together.

"Our opponent is especially the Porsche 911 Turbo. It is the standard, "Volker Mornhinweg, CEO of Mercedes-AMG does not see it as a problem but as an incentive:" If you want to break into this challenging segment of the super sports car, the car has to be right from the start. A second chance is not here. "When the new Mercedes AMG SLS was not about to impose an existing base, the AMG stamp. The super sports car has been developed by AMG. Assistance rendered to the Mercedes-shooter colleagues in Sindelfingen.

Extremely rigid aluminum space frame chassis, 1620 pounds empty weight, balanced weight ratio of 52 to 48 percent between the front and rear axles, optional ceramic brakes, 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox in Trans-Axle construction placed on the rear axle, rigid connection (torque tube) between the engine and gearbox and a 6.2-liter V8 with 571 hp - the list of technology devices can be a long time continues.

The same applies to the seventh generation of the Porsche 911 Turbo. Now with 500 hp, although in fact weaker than the Mercedes AMG, the SLS Assist relies on four-wheel drive and an even lower curb weight of just 1595 kg. In the rear, the newly developed 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine with gasoline direct injection is sitting, two turbochargers with variable turbine geometry (VTG) and an efficiency-enhancing Expansionssauganlage through which the mixture temperature is lowered at high speeds. Also: Around twelve kilograms technicians have saved the entire engine, and also lowered the center of gravity of the engine.

With the performance delivered both a head-to-head race: The Porsche sprints in 3.6 seconds from 0 to 100 km / h, with the optional 7-speed dual-clutch-equipped gear, even 3.4 s are possible be. The top speed is 312th Tempo The Mercedes rear-wheel drive will do the standard sprint in 3.8 s and run up to 317 km / h.

The doors swing wide to the top of the SLS, the optional Recaro bucket seat is set low. So get up and incur the doors, no other way. The cockpit is well arranged and spacious, the seating position perfect. Via a rotary switch can switch characteristic change of the double-clutch gearbox. The conventional Feder-/Dämpfer-Einheiten are not influenced by electronic means, the customer can choose between purchasing the standard and a harder performance tuning. The three-stage ESP can also be completely deactivated.

The only 206 kg, this high-rev V8 in the SLS sends shock waves through the gentle tempering the chassis, its 680 Newton meters of torque (Porsche: 650 Nm) go on a carbon fiber driveshaft to the gearbox. The engine sound rockt ordentlich. Agility, directional stability, taking up from low engine speed, stability in fast corners - the SLS excited at a high level. The attainable speeds match the experienced braking stability. The heavily loaded front axle at all times to obey any small steering movement. The Circuit ordered the gears quickly and smoothly, jerking is not noticeable.

The Porsche is more relaxed overall. He owes mainly to the optimized four-wheel drive. The so-called Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) supports the PSM (ESP). The system consists of a mechanical Hinterachssperre and a variable torque distribution to the rear axle by means of the brakes. Through targeted brake intervention on cornering the steering wheel of the 911 Turbo is improved. In driving mode, the system is clearly felt. Extremely long does the turbo neutral before it begins to slide over the front wheels. In Gasstößen or sudden load changes, breaks out at PSM, however, had time off the stern.

Who is taken out, which can directly operating as usual with the steering to correct easily. In the cockpit, first one comes much familiar. But in response to the criticism of the logical-to-use slides in the 911, which was previously a seven-speed dual-clutch transmissions are switched, Porsche offers a new three-spoke steering wheel with two large fixed-saws for 416 euros extra.

The seventh generation of the 911 Turbo is available from November at an introductory price of 145,871 Euros in the merchants. The Mercedes AMG SLS can be more time: It was not until mid-2010 he will be extradited, and is priced at less than 177,310 euros. Of course, both offer a super sports car handling dynamics, which can be savored alone entirely on closed-course. But one thing it is already clear: Never a Mercedes came the iconic sports car Porsche 911 Turbo, so dangerously close.

Hard to understand, but it seems to say that the SLS is merely close to the 911 Turbo, not beating it. Seems more like a review of the specs and/or previous drives of both cars, not a real comparision.

Just for the information. This was never a test. Autozeitung didnt even drive the cars, they looked at a paper and made their conclusion based on that.
I saw the article a week ago but never posted it since it just garbage.

I knew they never tested these cars together from the moment I saw this:

Terrible photoshop.

The lack of the Porsche's silver reflection on the red metal of the SLS gave it away. Terrible photoshop.

Why would they do such a crap article? Normally whenever someone posts an article here from them they're pretty good no?

It's common among German car magazines to do these sort of "pit together tests" between an existing car and a newly released model. The stuff about the new model is all usually based on theory and guesswork.

A pretty dumb type of comparison if you ask me.
