I wouldn't say that the E92 is technically superior. All in all, I think they're even but 335i seems to be slightly sportier and S5 more GT type comfortable coupe.

I read one such comparison where the 335i beat the RS4, I've also read where the S5 did as well. Don't let one little blip fool you, the RS4 is faster and handles better then the 335i and the S5. The M3 hasn't beaten the RS4 in each comparison either, so to think the 335i is better would be silly!

Re: 5th Gear: S5 vs 335i

Like I said ; I drove the 335i two days ago. I can tell you this, S5 need to be one damn special car to be worth the extra it costs over a 335i.

"Better car" , "techically superior" , those are strong statements.
Then i guess because RS4 won some comparisons against M3 , RS4 is a better car and technically superior according to your definitions.

Re: 5th Gear: S5 vs 335i

^^ROFL, good one Yannis....

I must say that was quite a nerve wreckingly close race. THeres nothing really in it, Drivers race for sure.

The Audi S5 is definitely the better looking car. It also seems slightly bigger then the 335 so im guessing its probably more spacious.

The 335 has a better power to weight ratio and probably offers a more entertaining drive (judging from Vicki's excitement).

All boils down to preference at the end of the day. Excellent battle and definitely arch rivals! Now for the TOP Gear review!!!

Well it comes with a NA engine plus 50hp more. Not only that but it looks quite special as well. Looks more expensive and much better than a A5, 3er and CLK. Add all of those tree attributes together and the S5 is worth the extra dough.

The 335i is off course a bit more enjoyable to drive thanks to the RWD configuration and the lighter weight. It also has a very attractive price.

Like some have already said it comes down the personal preference and how much money you are willing to pay.

Re: 5th gear : 335i vs S5

"A triumph of handling over power" pretty much sums it up. I think Audi engineers most definitely could have done more with the steering, but were(for the umpteenth time) bullied by those damned marketing monkeys. The S5 is still without question the car I'd choose if I had the "cheese": For sure though, if Audi put the time in they could make a car that out-powers, out-handles and out-performs the 335i. If only there was the will-power.

Re: 5th Gear: S5 vs 335i

I'm still not sure if the S5 and 335i are really dead on competitors. If the S5 can't really beat the 335i then it has no chance against the M3, but then again that is the RS5's job? Just like the 3er and CLK, the A5/S5 and 3 don't exactly line up IMO.

But still, when the S5 is compared to the M3 it's not crippled by it's price and therefore it's good sides may more easily be appreciated. Of course there is difference in the performance department but pure performance is not everything. Just look the M3, taking a step towards mainstream.

Not saying that the natural competition for the S5 is the M3 but the comparison is possible and may in some ways be beneficial for the S5. Furthermore, the size of the A/S5 puts it in between the 3-series and the 6-series (closer to the 3-series) and that is another strong point. Add the fact that it's interior is more focused at beeing a two person carrier as opposed to the E92 which to me seems more oriented at pleasing even the two passengers in the rear seat.

Re: 5th Gear: S5 vs 335i

remember there is a 3.2 liters turbo coming from Audi to compete with 335i. S5 will nolonger be its natural competitior.

Yeah it seems like the German's coupes are all over the place. The A5/S5 between the 3 and 6 and the 6 between the CLK and CL. I guess each gets more exposure this way.

Vicki doesnt know how to drive 4wd cars. In those conditions and on that track the S5 should have won. It looked like she was cruising in the S5, whilst the BMer was trashed round.

Re: 5th Gear: S5 vs 335i

335i had an advantage of that rolling start. S5´s quattro would definitely gain those 0,1 sec. if start would be normal.

Re: 5th Gear: S5 vs 335i

This is pointless..If S5 had this and that..Well,terms were equal for both cars and 335i was faster..there is no need to make a mess here..period
