No, it doesn't to me. New Golf VI is just a facelifted Mk V. It's nice, but not even close to 'Rocco.

I like both the Scirocco and the Golf R. In the metal the Scirocco is undeniably the more dramatic looking car despite the fact the VW actually pitches the Scirocco below Golf 6, model for model. The emphasis with Scirocco lies in dramatic looks and sporty feel with concessions being made in the quality and equipment levels department.

Golf 6 is the mainstay of the VW brand. It's classier, more grown up and more aloof in its driving demeanour [though no less capable] and is aimed at the more mature buyer. Similarly, it has to be more practical in order to accomodate a family with small kids. It's because of this upmarket positioning of the Golf that it earns the AWD drivetrain as opposed to the Scirocco R that makes do with the lighter, more playful 2WD setup which is in better keeping with the car's intended purpose.

Scirocco looks really weird (squashed or something) from some angles on the street. The Golf looks good from every angle.

My only problem with the latest Golf GTi is the fact that they have put one exhaust pipe on each side instead of two together on one side... much better on the R.

The dealer here has the new GTI on the lot and by chance one of them was left open, a misstep considering the dealership is closed on Sunday!

Anyway I want this car. The seats alone are worth the price of admission. The 2 they have are 5-doors loaded to the gilles with everything but navigation. Price you ask? 30K. I want a 3-door model please. My favorite small car for now. Have to see what Ford is going to do in January at Detroit as we'll finally get European style/design/quality Focus for 2011. If its anything like the Fiesta I drove this summer then they going to have a winner in the small car segment also. Time to change my signature. I'm seriously considering one.

I can't imagine what this Golf R will be like (and cost!) when it arrives here.

Awesome Marcus - 30K in USD. For a new, loaded GTI except Nav? Unbelievable! Is this including DSG which I'm sure you'd opt for? Directly converted that's R 225,000.00 for a GTI in South Africa. Unfortunately, a similarly turned out GTI here would cost in the region of R 350,000.00.

30K is in the region of what I spent on that demo WRX. For that money I would have aced the GTI without blinking. What a feel good car! What in-the-flesh image and good looks. What an interior. What an all rounder. What... [aw shut the f up now Martin. We get the picture]

Marcus, you can't go wrong. The GTI is such a complete product that it's even good enough for people who can afford a much pricier car.

Yep 30K. Dynaudio, HIDs, 18 inch wheels etc, the works. Has me really thinking about it.

Does anybody miss the characterful V6? I for one am not really looking forward to the force-induction route the new R is taking. I don't want DSG neither, after owning a car with DSG I know how much I miss a manual!

Yet emissions regulations dictate the trend of car manufacturing, and that includes smaller engines and force induction. Shame because the MkV R32 was one of the nicest sounding hot hatches around, even if it may not be that particularly quick. It had character.

Plus, as a long term proposition a NA engine will probably last longer too.

Will the US get the Focus RS?

The only good thing about the V6 was the phonemonal noise. Hatchbacks shouldnt be allowed to sound that good. Had a old vr6 sitting next to a ferrari the other day revving its engine and everyone thought the noise was coming from the prancing horse, apart from those in the know ofcourse.

Other than the noise the vr6 doesnt have much going for it in this day and age though. But boy what a noise.

So far, Ford hasn't really said anything on the Focus RS or even the normal Focus. Right now they're heavily marketing the Fiesta.

BTW, I'm not even lying. I saw a Fiesta (in that lime green color) on the roads near one of the malls by my house, and it looked GOOD.

I think the linearity in the VR6's power delivery is worth mentioning, as opposed to the turbocharged lumps that we all too familiar with now. But you are right, they drink gas, are quite heavy and don't produce that much power to offset all the disadvantages. But life is more than a zero sum game.

Volkswagen Golf R & Scirocco R Launched

Press Release

Golf R and Scirocco R top models now available to order
  • The most dynamic Golf ever consumes 21 percent less
  • Scirocco R: after successes on the track, now also at dealerships
  • R Line equipment for the sporty outfit
  • 1 million downloads of Scirocco R 24h Challenge for the iPhone
Volkswagen are proving that fuel consumption can be reduced even in the sporty high-end class with the 199 kW / 270 PS strong Golf R, which is now available to order. Thanks to a turbocharged high-tech TSI engine, it uses only 8.5 litres - 2.2 litres or 21 percent less than its predecessor.
In place of the six-cylinder engine, which has been typical in this class up to now, the new R models use turbocharged 2-litre, four-cylinder TSI engines. The four-wheel drive Golf R (350 Newton metres of torque at between 2,500 and 5,000 rpm) sprints to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds (5.5 seconds for the Golf R DSG) and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. Two of the many visually distinguishing features of the completely individualized, exceptional Golf are LED headlights and newly developed LED rear lights. The Golf R is available to order in Germany from €36,400 (Germany).

The Scirocco R is an equally exceptional powerhouse with its sharp 2.0 TSI engine, front-wheel drive, unique look and exclusive equipment. Output: 195 kW / 265 PS. Advantages: High performance and torque values with significantly reduced fuel consumption. An average of merely 8.0 litres (DSG) of Super Plus per 100 kilometres flow into the combustion chambers via direct injection, which corresponds to CO2 emissions of 187 g/km - the best possible value for a 250 km/h (electronically limited) fast sports car. Eagerly anticipated following its successes at the Nürburgring 24-hour race, the model is now at dealerships from only €33,475 (Germany).

For all of the customers who wish to have especially dynamic bodywork and interior design in the spirit of the enhanced version of the R models, but a petrol or diesel vehicle with less power, the finishing specialists at Volkswagen Individual have designed the R-Line. The Golf R Line and Scirocco R Line can now also be ordered with exclusive features. These include distinctive 17-inch "Mallory" alloy wheels (18-inch optional), roof edge spoilers, R-designed bumpers, high-gloss radiator grill and a likewise black diffuser in the rear section. In the interior, sill panel strips show the R Line family resemblance. Sport seats in new design "Kyalami" with R Line logo in the headrests, a sport steering wheel, pedal covers and footrest in stainless steel round off the sporty image.

The Scirocco R is also successful in the virtual world. In just three weeks, the iPhone application Scirocco R 24h Challenge achieved over 1 million downloads. The high-speed racing game reached the App Store's number 1 spot in 32 countries, including Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Norway, Japan, Poland, Portugal and Mexico, and is already Volkswagen's second successful form of mobile marketing after the successful Polo Challenge at the beginning of this year.

Would be sad, because the C208 is such a classy Convertible, especially the V8… Nevertheless the GTI is one fantastic car. Lovely seats, great build quality and enough horsepower you need in daily use.
