Bernie's Point System Reform!

Bernie Ecclestone wants to change the F1 rulesw to make sure the driver who wins the most races will take the drivers' championship.

"I got a bit distracted last season with all the McLaren and Ferrari business, but my intention is to push through this idea in the coming weeks," Ecclestone, who didn't travel to Australia, told the Mail on Sunday newspaper in London.

"The key word in motor racing is 'racing' and right now there aren't enough overtaking moves because drivers are happy not to take risks and claim second place because it's only two points less than winning the race."

"What I want to see is the winner of the most number of races as champion and second places only to be used if the top two finish the season with the same number of wins," he added. "The constructors' championship would keep the existing system."

Re: Bernie's Point System Reform!

Meh! If he wants drivers to engage in more overtaking then why the hell is he adding more street circuits on the schedule???

Re: Bernie's Point System Reform!

Good call, Bernie! The system needs to be reformed. It is crazy that there is only a two-pt gap between the winner and 2nd (aka the closest loser).

I am not on the Max & Bernie hate wagon because they have tough jobs and F1 viewers would not have seen the brilliant '07 season and exciting '08 Oz GP without M&B. Give the blokes some credit.

Re: Bernie's Point System Reform!

Agree that the system is lousy, as pointed out in the post above.

That said, in my mind Bernie's proposal of most wins will only cement that only drivers with the best cars will win the WDC. Underdog-cars that occasionally win and finish consistently strong wont have a chance.

I think they should simply increase the point gap for first place.

I would also add a point for pole... but that's another story.

Re: Bernie's Point System Reform!

3 points gap between 1st and 2nd finish would be optimal.

Re: Bernie's Point System Reform!

10-6-4-3-2-1 was the old system.

if Bernie wants to reward the top 8, i think they'll need 12 pts for the winner. also, i think the fastest lap of the race should be awarded a poinst at least.

^ The system is IMO as good as it gets. Others were worse, a lot worse.

this way, at least, no one will try to 'settle down' everyone will push for that fastest lap, and the point.
