It may still be well over a year until we know for sure what the next generation Mercedes E-Class will look like. But today, our spy photographer has taken pictures of a prototype of the codenamed W212 project close to Mercedes' test base at the Nurburgring.

For the 2010 model year the Mercedes E-Class is likely to drop its Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) in favour of a conventional brake system with high-tech features such as wet-weather disc wiping and wheel-selective cornering brake control. Top of the range models such as the AMG series may have optional ceramic-composite brakes.

The new E-class design will mimic the S-class' wheel-arch extensions, rising character line below the door handles and big bumpers. Other features will include a more sculpted wide-frame grille and geometric air intakes in the front fascia. Some say the front headlights and c-pillar treatment is heavily influenced by the latest Lexus models, which is rather ironic since Lexus was famous for 'borrowing' design cues from Mercedes in the past. We expect that the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show will reveal all.

Driver safety will be a major theme on the E-Class with lane-departure warnings, eye-movement monitor, traffic sign identification, road condition sensors and stability control for crosswinds, camber changes and tire wear.

We expect no surprises in regards to the engine options, ranging from a 184 hp 4-cylinder to the usual V6 and V8 engines and the range-topping E63 AMG 6.3 liter V8 producing 500-plus horsepower.

Notice the rectangular-shaped tailpipes... they were oval on previous spy pics.

lol Artist!:D

It's an Avantgarde (three barrels in the grille) so it has LEDs it seems.
The problem is: will Elegance have Leds, conventional lights in the main head-unit, ot these tacky ridiculous double fogs we saw?

BTW, big news! the W212 will ditch the SBC!!

I have said before, surely it is about time Xenon lights be made standard acorss the entire E-class range. The technology is more than 10 years old, shouldn't it be standared for cars like the E-class by now?

MB has already ditched the SBC when they facelift the W211

Yes I know the FL ditched the SBC, both on E-Class and in the CLS (at the same period despite him not being facelifted)! That's why I added the smiley!

BTW... Did the fl removed the SBC from the SL? I don't think so so you?

Well, Xenon lights are a great option to make money. Nearly no one wants to drive his new car without those lights!! But besides Avantgarde style, also Elegance should get them as standard equipement!

That's probably the US sport version...

The rear looks shaky to me...

Probably the V8 will get this exhaust system - and the E-Class with sportpackage will get the oval ones! Have no idea, but I can't imagine, that it will standard on every car!

Dam right! We are regretting not ticking the xenon option for our e-class. The standard lights does an above average job, but it just isn't enough.

I'm not convinced by the styling. There is way too much 'meat' above and around the rear wheel arch and the prominent side streaks gives the car an overly exaggerated squat stance.

Makes the BMW 5 series look good........................

I for one am disappointed they've ditched the SBC. They should've at least tried to fix/improve it instead of ditching it. Yes it was problematic, but that's the case with all new technology. You learn from your mistakes and try your best to iron out all bugs, not just give up.

Knowing MB, I know they've got something up their sleeves to replace it, otherwise it's a step backward for Mercedes-Benz.

The oval exhausts are for the 350's and the rectangular are the 550's.

The price MB Australia has been charging for Xenons is LUDICROUS (up to $4500!!!) And you know, apparently they only cost around $300 more to manufacture and install.

To install Bi-xenon is much more expensive than getting it pre-installed,for some reason i don't know why it's the same thing!

Must be wiring and so forth. But imagine...to fit your car with Xenons is costing MB $300 more and then they charge you $4000 more for it! And yet it is standard equipment on every single lexus!
