Did I just hear the sound of a new transmission working its' magic?

Oh man this is clearly not an automatic gearbox!!! This is clearly what we all eagerly waited for...Finally...

The tester is clearly not a driftman! And the car seems to be quite sporty, quite oversteering-oriented, and no ESP here!!! Nice move! Looks like a good locking differential, this.

Do you want shift "column shift style"? I don't.

It makes sense for an automatic transmission, especially when you can probably manually shift gears using buttons behind the 'wheel. For a manual, placing it in the center console makes more sense.

It really sounds like a manual transmission...this would be awesome... A Mercedes with more then 500 hp and manual transmission...

I can see your point: why having two different shifters, in two different places, for the same car, only depending of the gearbox?
I've rarely seen that. The S or ML have colums shifter, because there are not MT available, whereas the C-Class has normal shifter, for auto and MT (event if it is a "fake" shifter for the auto, because fully electronically controlled).

How can Mercdedes justify the two solutions for the same car? It forces them to developp two center consoles, and so one....

On the other side, the 3 series has also two different interiors (idrive or not), and for exemple the ML, GL and ML (the S also I think) have a US-center console with big cupholders whereas the European versions have different ones...

So, why not? It allows the automatics to have more space, supplementar glove-box!

Sounds like a SMG/DSG to me. You can hear the gearchanges and the gas still 100%

Very important issue, IMO.

Except MB are developing manual (or even DCT) for E63 AMG, then shifter in the center tunnel can be easily applied to other models as well, while auto shifter can be mounted to the steering column.




Then another question appears: is it really economical to move the shifter to the steering column, and not applying some space-saving "e-shifter" ala BMW (X5, 5er, 6er etc) or Jaguar (XF) in the central tunnel where manual shifter usually sits?

Good question.

Manual transmissions in E-Classes are very rare actually. They're non-existent on the bigger engined models for one and the few that are sold on the lower end models are usually bought by people who do a lot of towing or someone who wants an E-Class with a manual, generally.

Perhaps, and this is a serious thought now, perhaps there won't be a manual option on the next E-Class? But I seriously can't see that occurring at the same time since there is a very small demand for manuals on the E-Class. We'll have to wait and see.

But to answer your question, I have not thought about it this way and financially speaking it would be silly to do this.

Dam, I do not like the 80's retro interior styling. Why has MB retain the foot operated parking brakes when the majority of their rival has gone for the electronic ones? It seems like MB has retained the traditional clock on the instruments panel and they have gone back to the traditional dial to indicate the engine temp and fuel level. This is seriously retro.

man they CAN NOT drop the foot operated hand brake..its a MUST...
the day they do that..it will no longer be MB..
as for the dials.. i kinda like that retro look..
a analog clock and analog gauges infront of your eyes..
and more detailed and modern info in the Command screen..seems like a good idea to me

i love the styling of the interior , very classic , very neat work by mercedes-benz, just brought them back where they belong. very nice!
