Re: [scans]: EVO drive CLK 63

What month is this issue? Is this the same issue with the CLS/Quattroporte comparo in it???

Sounds like they want want a racecar and that 9/10 folks would be completely satisfied with this car. Still though 4 1/2 stars is a good showing for a Benz at EVO.

Re: [scans]: EVO drive CLK 63

One thing I've noticed lately is that Mercedes, Audi and BMW in that order have had a lock on all the new car buzz over the last few months. I mean there is a new Benz in every issue of most publications every month now and BMW is right there along with Audi in a lot of them. It is a great time for German car fans for real.

Yes, this article is from the same June issue of Evo which contained the CLS55 vs M5 vs Quattroporte comparison. I bought this issue!!

Yes, until the AMG comes out with a manual gearbox and are willing to give up some of that autobahn cruising comfort in their cars, magazines like EVO will always find that there is "something missing" when pushing at the limits.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again: this is a bit irrelevant because these cars will rarely ever be put to their handling limits on everyday roads. Even on a track, most drivers aren't skilled enough to take these cars to the limits safely.

Re: [scans]: EVO drive CLK 63

They seemed to really like the car, apart from some small parts!

I agree with them that the M division need to improve their breaks, I have heard a lot of people say that fade easily!

This car looks awesome, one of my favourite looking cars at the moment!

I say this again, they dont fade easily for daily-use, its when you take the car to the track the brakes are starting to fade after a couple of laps.

I suppose these cars aren't really designed for track use and if you want to use them for that, just upgrade the brakes!

BTW, I just noticed I misspelled brakes!

Re: [scans]: EVO drive CLK 63

Its funny because most BMW fans are always so adamant that the M-cars will run rings around an AMG on the track because thats what they have been designed to do as opposed to AMG's focus on real world comfort/dynamic compromise. So why should the brakes on the BMW's fade so easily? They are after all supposed to be a drivers car.

Good job to MB on the CLK. It really must be close to perfect for road use. Shame im sooooo bored with the CLK's looks.

M cars dont run rings around AMG, not over RS cars either. M cars just has the edge on a track.
Brakes on M cars dont fade on public roads but they have a tendency to fade on a track after a couple of laps on a track (but so does many cars that goes around a track). Ceramic brakes arent even an option for M cars.

Re: [scans]: EVO drive CLK 63

as just me says..they would hardly fade on public roads..
and most BMW M drivers dont take their car to the track..even though BMW fans like to belive so..

But if you wanna brag about a M cars track capabilitys, then brakes should not fade.. and there is always room for improvement..so mark my words that the next M car will have killer brakes..no doubt..

In all car intervjuves with M-division questions about the brakes are popular. BMW always try to defend why they arent using better brakes, better pistons (or whatever its called).

Re: [scans]: EVO drive CLK 63

Whats their response? Why are they not using better brakes? One of the reasons for reducing the number of callipers would be weight right? But why have they failed to explore ceramics etc. to produce brakes as good as porsche? It seems perculiar since the rest of the car seems to be engineered to the nth degree.

I agree. I think I'll have to go get this issue too, seems to be a MB fest, just like the July issue of Automobile Magazine.

Maybe costs are the reason, or maybe the argements with some supliers.
Don't worry, competition will force them to do so.

I don't think it is so much about a Merc's handling limits being inferior to BMW, but more about being less fun to drive. And I think that is why you see a magazine like Evo pick a hatchback over a exotic many times - the fun factor. BTW my first post here, so /wave.

Good job to MB on the CLK. It really must be close to perfect for road use. Shame im sooooo bored with the CLK's looks.
We're comparing regular sports brakes with ceramic brakes. Of course one of them is going to be better. Replace the regular brakes with ceramic brakes, then problem solved. No idea why they don't use it though.
If we are comparing brakes, most Benz brakes overheat in tracks due to ESP intervention (most of the tests I've seen), and also the fact that we are trying to stop very heavy cars. If only ceramic brakes were cheaper.
