2009 (unnamed) Super Corvette

650-hp boosted super-Vette is getting closer to reality.

From afar this Vette would appear to be just another Z06. Now rub your eyes and take a closer look, because these are the first spy shots of the highly anticipated, but yet unnamed super Corvette. The large hood bulge you see is rumored to be concealing a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8, and packing upwards of 650 horsepower. This engine will likely use an integrated intake-manifold intercooler and should sprint from 0 to 60 mph in less than 3.4 seconds. And, with the addition of more carbon fiber in the body and expanded use of polycarbonates, this super Vette could weigh less than the current Z06.

GM’s Performance Center in Wixom, Michigan will likely produce the powerplant, but expect only about 1500–2000 copies annually. Initially called the Blue Devil, there has been much speculation in the past several months about the name for this super Z06. Recently we hear that GM has scrapped the Blue Devil name in favor of Corvette SS (we hope not), Z07, or even reviving the Stingray nameplate. Whatever the name may be, expect this beast to carry a sticker around the $100,000 mark, which is by far the cheapest way to get 650 hp in a production car.

Re: 2009 (unnamed) Super Corvette

Isn't 650hp a bit to much in very light front engined car? The tires would probably wear off during a take off.

I think it will be fine...I don't think 700-800hp modded Vettes are too uncommon....

I don't think the LS7 can go to 600+ HP plus in NA form, at least not without boring.

Re: 2009 (unnamed) Super Corvette

SPY PHOTOS: Chevrolet Corvette SS

This might look like an ‘ordinary’ Z06 with a funky hood scoop, but our photographer’s tuned ears tell us this Corvette is anything but ordinary!

Our shooter claims that the sound coming from the engine could only be a supercharged 6.2-liter V8, and our sources speculate that this Corvette is pushing nearly 650 horsepower! And when the Corvette SS goes to production – expect the price tag to be in the $100,000 range (appr. 85 000 Euros).

The supercharged V8 will utilize an integrated intake manifold intercooler, and it’s expected to run 0-100 in under 3.5 seconds. The super-hot SS will weigh even less than the Z06, utilizing more carbon fibre in the body, as well as polycarbonate material.

The 6.2-liter V8 will be built at GM's Performance Center in Wixom, Michigan, with annual production numbers expected to be in the 1500 to 2000 range. Production on the Supercharged Corvette, also known as the Blue Devil, will start in the first quarter of 2008 (as a 2009 model). As for its exact name – well, we’re hearing everything from Corvette SS, to Z07, from Blue Devil to resurrecting the Stingray name!

Re: 2009 (unnamed) Super Corvette

While rumors of a super-powered Corvette continue to circulate, a reader of TheCarConnection has some convincing evidence that the project is a go. "Yonni G," a student near Milford , Mich. - the site of GM's proving grounds - spotted this prototype on public roads last week.

"As I was driving I saw the prototype way ahead of me on the road, and it looked like a really aggressive Corvette. Luckily I had borrowed my dad's camera for a project at school and had it with me in the car and snapped some shots as it passed by. The car was amazing! It sounded very powerful and definitely did not seem like your everyday Corvette.

These shots show what's been hyped as a "Blue Devil" Corvette - so dubbed after GM CEO Rick Wagoner's alma mater, Duke University . The rumor mill suggests the super-Vette could become a reality in 2008, with a supercharged Z06-derived 7.0-liter V-8 with 600 hp and a $100,000 pricetag. Stay tuned to our auto show coverage in case the hottest Corvette ever makes a surprise appearance.
