Re: Eames Lounge Chair

LOL, it is the great American classic.

I have always liked the Eames "lounge chair".

I was reading just the other day that it was launched to the American public in 1959 with extraordinary hype -- its unveiling was even televised.

It still looks great even today.

The original manufacturer [Herman Miller] still make it, but it is also made by the Swiss company Vitra and the Italian company ICF -- there are also a number of other companies now producing unregistered reproductions of it in China and Italy.

Re: Eames Lounge Chair

BTW, the Swiss company Vitra has reproduced the Eames Plywood elephant from 1945 in a limited edition of 1000 because June 17, 2007 marked the 100th birthday of Charles Eames. (if he was alive)

Re: Eames Lounge Chair

Cool, Rob!

I was reading about it too. I always liked it, and it's also comfortable.

They still reproduce the original, there are some good ( and not so good) knockoffs out there.

Don't say a thing but there is one on it's way home

Oops, I was wrong, ICF make only the aluminium group of Eames chairs, not the plywood lounge chair.

Great, it is a really excellent piece of furniture -- very comfortable but also really interesting to look at. It has always reminded me of the sculpture of Jean Arp, Isamu Noguchi, ...and even Jean Dubuffet to a degree.

Re: Eames Lounge Chair

those elephants are pretty cool, they remind me of the yanagi butterfly stool. amazing what designers created with plywood back then.

as for the eames lounge chair, like Rob said, its a classic. gorgeous piece of furniture and very comfortable as well. when i was walking around town the other day i found some imitations called "emes reading chair". the odd thing was they were charging a similar price compared to the real one.
