Compact crossover market has been quit empty when it comes to luxury models. It has been dominated by BMW X3, Infiniti EX and Land Rover LR3. Audi and Mercedes-Benz both have just entered this segment with their new models Q5 and GLK. As Mercedes-Benz already has the GL-Class, then what does the K stand for in GLK? German dictionary says that K stands for “kurz” which means “short”. Makes sense as the GLK sort of looks like the miniature GLK and inherits many features from its bigger brother. In addition to GL-Class, GLK also uses design lines from the new C-Class. Looks can be deceiving, GLK looks boxy and masculine, but its length 4.52 meters is shorter than the X3 or Q5. This is definitely not one of these cars that can be called a girl car due to its size and design. GLK design manager Volker Hellwig has said that “It doesn’t look so much smaller than the M-Class, even though it is smaller, because of the boxy, edgy design language.” All GLK versions are equipped with 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, with a power distribution ratio of 45:55. 4MATIC works together with the latest electronic control systems so you can feel safe on the road and off the road.
