Has that wagon got a stance that means business or what?! There's nothing quite like an RS6 Avant and this new model shan't disappoint.

^ True and when you look in the rear view mirror few cars say 'GET THE FU@K OUT OF THE WAY' quite like an RS6 does. :D

As for the gearbox... maybe RS6 will premiere a new dual clutch gearbox because the new generation the R8 is to be 4.0 TFSI and DSG.
  5. martinbo Global Moderator / Editor

The new RS6 will most likely feature a dual clutch transmission more because the new M5 has one and less because of what is still a fair way off in the next generation R8.

By my account Audi have to go with S-Tronic (DSG) for the RS6 given that they were the pioneers of the technology in the modern context and it would be an embarrassment to offer a slush-matic (even though there's no true shame in that) when their main rival has implemented technology wherein Audi are industry leaders.

Any relationship between the fitment of DSG to R8 and RS6 will be more incidental and less synergistic given the subtle packaging differences of the gearboxes between the front-engined and mid-engined layouts.

I think it was here I read that Mercedes is developing a new and more DSG gearbox look alike. So I also think the next RS6 is getting DSG.

I like how it looks, but I think it is not the final body kit.

Here some numbers (as I always like):

1.775 kg BMW 535i sDrive Sedan
1.840 kg BMW 535i xDrive Sedan
1.845 kg BMW 535i sDrive Touring
1.910 kg BMW 535i xDrive Touring
1.905 kg BMW 550i sDrive Sedan
1.975 kg BMW 550i xDrive Sedan
    1.945 kg BMW M5 Sedan

From these numbers we study that a Touring weighs 70 kg more than a Sedan and that xDrive also weighs 70 kg more than sDrive.

    1.815 kg Audi A6 3.0 TFSI Sedan
    1.865 kg Audi A6 3.0 TFSI Avant
    1.970 kg Audi S6 4.0 TFSI Sedan
    2.020 kg Audi S6 4.0 TFSI Avant

With these engines, V6 T and V8 T, the Audi is only available with AWD. Here the Avant is 50 kg heavier than tha Sedan.

To be fair, we should compare the RS6 Avant with a potential M5 Touring, so we add the 70 kg of the Touring to the M5 Sedan and we get a

    2.015 kg BMW M5 Touring.

The problem is we have no RS6 weight figures and must then compare the S6 Avant with a potential 550i sDrive Touring. This gives us

1.975 kg BMW 550i sDrive Touring.

It happens that the 550i sDrive Touring is 45 kg lighter than the S6 Avant, but if we take a

2.045 kg BMW 550i xDrive Touring

it will be 25 kg heavier than the S6 Avant.

We can then conclude the RS6 Avant will be heavier than a potential M5 Touring, but that only due to AWD. But alot also depends on the weight saving Audi is going to employ on the RS6, as we know how much BMW worked on it, the M5 is "only" 40 kg heavier than the 550i. I think the RS6 Avant will not weigh more than 2.100 kg, an AWD M5 Touring would weigh 2.085 kg.

What do you think the enigine power will be for the RS6 and RS7 assuming the V8 TFSI is utilised?
  9. donkeykong Well-Known Member

I'm hoping they at least match outputs of the previous RS6,and make it the most powerful in class. Realistically though,I think we're looking at a 550 hp range.
  10. Levi68 Well-Known Member

I think the RS6/RS7 will get a minimum of 550 PS, but 600 PS would also be possible and nice as the car will have AWD and still be quite heavier, though I would like Audi to lose as much weight as possible. I think 600 PS are possible to get from this 4.0l V8, it would make 150 PS/l. But 150 PS/l is also what the next S3 is going to get, with 300 PS from its 2.0l I4.

Maybe this time around we'll get the RS6 sedan here in the U.S. If there is an RS6 sedan this time???

Not an engineer so based on my limited knowledge I would have to agree that their basic layout would probably limit the possibility of sharing transmissions, either whole or internals.

If it does get it because of the M5 then bravo BMW for forcing their hand because I reckon DCT is the perfect match for this caliber of car.

I think it will be the same as the RS6 C6 namely first came out Avant about a year after the sedan will join.
  14. Sunny Well-Known Member

I think we will probably get a RS7.
  15. Deckhook Well-Known Member

^+1. I don't see the need for a saloon when there's the A7 shape. Which probably means you will get an RS7.

    Audi S8 Sedan
    4.0 TFSI 520 PS
    8 speed tiptronic
    2.050 kg
    0-100 km/h in 4.2 sec

    Audi S7 Sprotback / S6 Avant
    4.0 TFSI 420 PS
    7 speed S tronic
    2.020 kg
    0-100 km/h in 4.9 sec

    Audi S6 Sedan
    4.0 TFSI 420 PS
    7 speed S tronic
    1.970 kg
    0-100 km/h in 4.8 sec

    Audi A8 Sedan
    3.0 TFSI 290 PS
    8 speed tiptronic
    1.905 kg
    0-100 km/h in 6.1 sec

    Audi A6 Sedan
    3.0 TFSI 300 PS
    7 speed S tronic
    1.815 kg
    0-100 km/h in 5.5 sec

The S8 Sedan weighs 145 kg more than the A8 Sedan. The S6 Sedan weighs 155 kg more than the A6 Sedan. I do not expect the RS6 and RS7 to be much heavier than the S6 and S7. In worst case the RS6 Avant will be as fast as the S8. But I think it will be even faster because:
    1. It may still weigh less
    2. It may have at least 30 PS more
    3. It will very likely have DSG

My bet for the RS6 Avant
    550 PS, 700 Nm
    S tronic
    2.040 kg
    0-100 km/h in 4.0 sec
  17. Deckhook Well-Known Member

The figures you are expecting for the RS6 are right on the money in my opinion. (y)
  18. Levi68 Well-Known Member

I really like the A6 in general. IMO the RS6 Avant will be the most interesting daily and practical yet extremely fast car and still comfotable and secure car, without getting a SUV, but it will also the most exclusive and in the same time understated.

Now it even has HUD, so nothing more to envy.
