There's no way this could ever be classified as a proper "hatchback' with a roof as long slung as this car has. This is not only for styling but for reasons of lowering the center of gravity which hamper the traditional hatchback's cornering ability(MINI excepted) and dynamic character.

I'm also pleased to see development of this car including testing on the Nurbrigring. :t-cheers:

You guys can spin this any way you like it isn't the same type of car as this:

The car VW is developing is much taller and on differs from the GTI and the other jillion hatchbacks VW makes by a few inches that the rear deck slopes.

What is the point of all this discussion about the name of that car? hatch, coupe, whatever... The golf is plain, heavy, plump and fat, whereas this is a delicious little sporty car...Even the Golf 6 will be a typical Golf (unlike the 5), so not very sporty. This is much lower, looks much longer and broad, much more sporty.

There is no way I would take a Golf over this Scirocco! The point of this car is clearly to bring passion in the VW's line-up.

Yes, you read it right! Eos is about to get a new brother: a coupe-convertible version of the Scirocco. Accordint to AutoExpress, the new model will be unveiled sometime in 2009 and in a concept version at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show, where the production coupe version will be unveiled.

With the upcoming two-door sports car, Volkswagen wants to challenge models like Porsche Boxster and Audi TT Roadster.
The decision of building a convertible version comes with no surprise, as the Scirocco shares its underpinnings with the attractive Eos.
The Scirocco Convertible will feature a complex folding hood mechanism, but this won’t affect the car’s distinctive styling. The rear seats are ditched to accommodate the roof mechanism.
Under the hood you will get the same options as in the Coupe version, but you will be able to transform the Scirocco from a refined, sporty coupé to a dazzling convertible in a matter of seconds.

Not sure if this is breaking news or not, figured I'd post it anyway!:)

The Scirocco won't have that grill I think, Winterkorn does not want it and wanted Dasilvo to correct it.
The rear lights are those of the Iroc I would say.

I'm a bit confused: Eos, OK. Scirocco, why not but the Eos is there so don't really see the point. And the Golf VI will also be convertible...

I fully understand the Scirocco, along the Golf. But here, 3 compact convertibles, seems a bit overkill...the Eos is rather low and sporty, like the Scirocco. And the Golf, well, not the kinf oc convertible that appeals the most when you have an Eos, or a Scirocco next to it. It will be less pricey, that's all...

VW Scirocco: First interior spy shot!

Here is the first interior spy shot of the upcoming VW Scirocco and as you can see it looks like heavily influenced by the VW Eos.
Due to the heavy disguise front and rear, our photographers focused their lenses on the inside. And it’s clear that VW has kept development costs in check by using the stylish dashboard from the Eos coupé-cabriolet, rather than creating a new layout.

That’s good news for customers, as its high-quality feel and smart styling will boost the car’s appeal when it goes on sale here late next year.
Buyers will also get the option of the firm’s latest in-car entertainment system. The touchscreen set-up debuts in the Tiguan SUV, and has a large colour display, plus easy-to-use controls for the sat-nav and stereo.

Preview: 2009 Volkswagen Scirocco

When VW first lifted the covers off the Iroc concept at last year’s Paris Motor Show our first thoughts was here is a car that would look stunning just the way it was. Unfortunately VW’s new CEO Martin Winterkorn didn’t agree and he subsequently sent designers back to the drawing boards to revise the final styling, which also had the unwanted effect of pushing the new Scirocco’s release date into the second half of next year.

As this latest rendering suggests, the new car loses the aggressive front end styling of the concept and instead sports a divided grille with a single bar at the top and larger intakes beneath. The overall proportions remain much the same but the production version loses the sculpted flanks and picks up shaper lines around the glasshouse.

Production will start at VW’s Portugal plant early next year alongside its cousin, the Eos convertible. Since both cars share the same basic underpinnings it’s thought VW may add a drop-top version of the Scirocco complete with a folding metal roof.

The engine lineup will kick off with VW’s brilliant 1.4L twin-charger and top out with the Golf R32’s torquey 3.2L V6 engine. Both FWD and AWD models will be on offer, including a new GTI version with VW’s latest 2.0L turbo engine and FSI technology. This new engine, which will also be appearing in the Mark VI Golf GTI, will develop around 230hp and will be available with the six-speed DSG gearbox.

A droptop version of the Scirocco, absolute nonsense. It would be the same car as the EOS!!!!

This is great news, i just don't like the act of destroying the car's philosophy just because MR the PDG doesn't like it.

No Volkswagen Scirocco for U.S.

The decision has been made: no Volkswagen Scirocco for North America. Stefan Jacoby, CEO of Volkswagen of America, revealed the decision to Car and Driver in an interview at the L.A. auto show.

The four-passenger coupe will go on sale in Europe in mid-2008. But the U.S. already has the GTI and the R32, which are enough halo vehicles for what is already a niche segment, Jacoby says.

“We need to focus on our core products,” he says, namely the Rabbit (Golf), Jetta, Passat, and the launch of the new Tiguan compact SUV. “The (2009 Scirocco) is lovely, but we can’t have everything.”

Meanwhile, Jacoby confirmed the launch of the 2009 Jetta TDI is being pushed back from spring 2008 to late summer due to problems with the emissions system.

“We have a solution and are working on it,” Jacoby says. Part of the delay is the car must go through emissions testing and validation again, but in the interim VW can begin dealer training to be ready when the vehicle is okayed for sale.

“We need to launch with proper emissions and quality,” he says, noting the vehicle is essential to development the TDI brand. And Jacoby says even with the delay, VW still will be the first manufacturer to offer diesel technology compliant with emissions regulations in all 50 states. And VW will use its fleet to promote diesels in general in the U.S., he says.

Diesel-Powered Phaeton

One such statement: the return of the VW Phaeton to the U.S. is likely to have a diesel engine—and only a diesel engine. While the initial expectation was that the luxury full-size sedan would not be sold again in the U.S. until the next-generation bows, Jacoby now tells us the current sedan may make a comeback.

The Phaeton has been on sale in Europe since 2002. A long-wheelbase version of the sedan, which marked VW’s first foray into the high-end luxury segment, went on sale in the U.S. a year later, but was pulled in 2006 due to slow sales.

“There is no reason to relaunch with the same as what we had before,” Jacoby says of the 335-hp, 4.2-liter V-8 and 420-hp, 6.0-liter W-12 engines in the original U.S.-spec Phaeton. “We need something to stand out from the old one. It needs a unique selling point. What else do we have but diesel?” he says, in describing the kind of bold move VW would need to relaunch the flagship sedan.

As for avoiding past pitfalls of trying to sell a VW-badged luxury sedan, Jacoby’s unsatisfactory answer is that with the right products, the brand can successfully broaden its lineup and achieve broad appeal.
Built in the U.S.A.

As for VW’s exploration of building either a vehicle assembly, engine assembly plant,—or both—in the U.S. as a currency hedge, Jacoby says the decision will be made in the first half of next year. The automaker’s only North American plant is in Puebla, Mexico, where it builds the Beetle and Jetta (Bora in other markets).

No Volkswagen Scirocco for U.S. - Auto Shows - Car and Driver November 2007

Nothing could be more frustrating. VW needs product here, but the guy is right the Scirocco is nothing more than another hatch that has been
slightly squashed to make it appear to be a proper sport car like the previous Scirocco/Corrado so it doesn't make sense here. Problem is why doesn't VW just make a real sports coupe with a hatch instead of another hatchback.
