    Measured data:
    Tyres:
    Michelin Pilot Sport
    Weight:
    1924 kg
    0-100 km/h: 4,0 s
    0-160 km/h: 8,4 s
    0-200 km/h: 12,6 s
    400 m: 12,0 s (196 km/h)
    Braking 100-0 km/h (cold/warm): 35,5 m/35,8 m
    18 m slalom: 66,4 km/h
    110 m ISO evasive test: 140,4 km/h
Average fuel consumption: 14,5 l/100 km

    Verdict:
The new M5 is great for cruising and drifting as well. Too bad the gearbox needs some refinement - it's sometimes too hard. The fuel consumption is high, just like the weight of the car. The traction is weak at wet surfaces. The performance is excellent, the suspension is comfortable, the active steering is direct and precise.

Final rating: 4/5 stars (Alpina B5 Biturbo 5/5)

Those acceleration times seem to be good coming from AMS?
  3. DeDe Contributing Member

Or maybe they had perfect conditions for the testing. AMS and Sport Auto times are always similar (and sometimes slower than other magazines' results) because of their testing methode: 2-way/4 run averages.

Incredible times, 4.0s to 100km/h is the equivalent to 3.8/3.9s to 60s....... but did I read the weight distribution right for those scans 52.3%/47.7%?

Is BMW starting to relax their 50%/50% weight balance or could they not economical achieve the desired balance?
  5. klier Member

50%/50% is never achieved to begin with. They strive to go as close as possible, but never have I read it's exactly 50%.
Maybe they need a little more weight in the back for grip, who knows. There can be a lot of reasons.

Also, looks like AMS likes the auto box of the B5 much more than the M DCT, so they gave the Alpina 5 stars and the M5 4 stars :t-banghea
I would NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS take the 8 speed over DCT. The DSG in a VW Golf already is infinitely superior to the ZF 8 speed, let alone the M tuned DCT in the new M5.

I think the extra weight isn't at the back but is at the front (big engine, two turbos, etc). I don't know if the 50/50 was ever achieved either but I do know it was generally quite close and closer than this.

Can't say how sweet the M-DCT is in the M5 without driving it but I do know that the PDK in the Panamera Turbo isn't as sweet as in a Boxster or Cayman so maybe upping the ability to cope with the extra torque causes some roughness to enter the gear change.

The new developed LSD for the new M5 seem to doing a good work in the dry. Amazing acceleration times coming from AMS.

That is kind of odd, considering almost every other review has had nothing but praise for the M5's new transmission.

Huge step up from the E60 in SportAuto's test.

    0-100km/h 4,7s
    0-200km/h 14,4s

    Hockenheimring 1:16,3 min

That is an good time for a 2 ton sedan, fastest BMW except for the GTS and faster than Panamera Turbo, CLS63 PP and E63.

LOL DeDe. Just admit it. It's a darn good time for a M5 ;)
  17. DeDe Contributing Member

It is. Even better if it did it on regular Pilot Sports - no info yet.

About the Panamera Turbo S: it is the real competitor to the M5 (550 vs 560 hp), not the 500-hp-Panamera Turbo.
  18. Sunny Well-Known Member

Well, if HP is the only factor that decides what cars compete, I guess M3 GTS is the real competitor to C63 (444 HP vs 450 HP), not the 420HP M3. ;)
  19. DeDe Contributing Member

It seems to me that (for german magazines) HP is on the 1st place and maybe price on the 2nd.

    MEH!
Just think about how the M5 would drive and behave if BMW charged €80k more for it. People can spin this towards either Porsche or BMW, and you always blindly choose the Porsche.

So, per that, you actually say Sunny is right with the C63 vs GTS. While he clearly isn't (which was his intention of course).
There's a whole lot more than just comparing raw hp numbers. I would have thought that YOU of all people here would know this.

Strange I never see any tests between a standard C63 and an all-out M3 GTS. They have around as much hp. Very strange indeed.........not!
