First test with incredible performance figures! The Mercedes SLS was never going to beat the 458 Italia outright. The Porsche 911 Turbo S, maybe. But not the 458. I think Mercedes-AMG can be very proud of themselves. We also have the Black Series SLS to look forward to.
Then why is it priced like a Ferrari then? Performance-wise the SLS is marginally faster than the current gen sports cars(LP560, GT3 and F430) but is clearly slower than the next generation cars(458, MP12C and Gallardo successor). IMO, the SLS will need a technical upgrade in 3 years time to keep up with the rivals.
SLS and 458 Italia. They're not in the same league. These are the only similarities: Both with 570 hp Both with 7-speed-dual-cluth Both with RWD Both with 2 seats ...that's all. :t-cheers:
Losing to a Ferrari is not a shameful thing, especially for Mercedes. We all knew that the Ferrari would be better at this performance thing. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the SLS' price either. People at this level don't care about price to put it mildly if they did they'll all buy GTRs. The look and heritage and well under 200K price in the U.S. will sell out SLS quite easily. M
The single best performance car on sale today is the 599 GTO. The second-best performance car on sale today is the 458 Italia. There are many manufacturers that make truly fantastic performance cars - the current range of 911s is as impeccably well resolved and capable as ever and the Mercedes SLS is uniquely special and evocative. McLaren's MP4-12C will be an engineering masterpiece and dynamically the equal of the 458 Italia. But in the end - complete supercar product in mind - Maranello's magic proves matchless once more. When it comes to supercars it's Ferrari that defines the definitive.
It is priced at close to the Ferrari because that's how Mercedes would like the car to be preceived as:- A credible alternative to the 458 Italia and to maximise profits, naturally. The SLS also packs many features (e.g. the gullwing doors), new technologies, and bespoke items that are exclusive to the SLS (and its future siblings) and hence the high price. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 458 Italia's platform is going to have the same lifecycle (8-9 years) as the F430 (F131E). The F430's platform was only a modified version of the 360 Modena (F131) so it was 9 years old by the time the F430 was phased out. So Ferrari will arguably have extracted better economics from the 458 Italia's platform than Mercedes-AMG has from the SLS as the SLS is only expected to have a life of only 4 years. A technical upgrade is available for the SLS. But they will be going to the Black Series.
Don't worry there's already a new AMG engine, wait for a couple of years and that engine will eventually power the SLS in whichever trim "normal" car or even BS one.
Wow, this is a very flexible car! 458 Italia / 599 GTB Fiorano 70-120 km/h in 6th gear: 5,7 s / 8,4 s 70-120 km/h in 6th gear: 11,4 s / 17,8 s
^^ That's some insane acceleration. It will make shifting up and down a joy. It is bound to set crazy racords around tracks.
Man Ferrari doesn't mess around when it comes to it's rear engined V8 cars, kinda like MB with the S-Class.Amazing acceleration numbers indeed.:icondrool
Ferrari are untouchable when it comes to engine. Only Porsche and BMW develop engines of this calibre. We'll have to wait 2-3 years for the 998 GT3 to see Germany's answer to this menacing performance.
