So if LP640 is a sportscar what is a M3? Shopping trolley?

    Go read Sayyaaf's post!

Forget about the names, I put them all on a level from 1-4. 1 being the most extreme, 4 being the least extreme.
LP640 is a supercar (level 2). M3 is a sports coupé (level 4). Although the difference between sportscar and sportscoupé is still rather vague in my book...

If the R8 V10 is not a supercar, then my name is Homer Simpson.

Quiting some of the latest tests in some newspapers here in Sweden:

"The R8 V10 is the brand new allround supercar. Noting can match it at the moment... bla bla bla"

So I guess the motor journalists are wrong as well.

Get over it people. R8 has always been and always will be a supercar. Weather you like it, or no (as the BMW R8 owner :D )

Do you people know who is credited with first coining the phrase "supercar"?

    Go wiki-google-ask-watchamacallit.

First of all, don't scoff at the 0-100 km/h time of 3.9 secs. Remember that this is for a car with a manual gearbox and no fancy, dual-clutch automated piece of wizardry - this makes the time all the more impressive. 316 km/h? Mid-engined? V10? 386 kW, 530 Nm - all impressive stats but stats never tell the full story about what makes a supercar.

The Porsche 997 GT RS is a supercar. It's nothing but, despite its supposedly paltry figures of 331 kW and 430 Nm. Pah! A C63 AMG puts those figures to shame! But then, the C63 AMG is the furthest thing from a supercar.

So, onto the idea of what makes a supercar...

A supercar is undefinable by raw numbers alone. It's a concept of performance, visual drama, sound, emotion, passion, exclusivity, form, danger, driver appeal and many more things.

The 997 GT3 RS is very much a supercar where, interestingly, a 997 Carrera is simply a sports car. It's the indeterminable appeal that, paradoxically, defines what a supercar is.

A Ferrari 599 GTB is, technically, a GT. A grand tourer of the highest order. And, yet, it in itself is also a supercar and a bloody good one at that.

In exactly the same way, the Audi R8 V10 is truly, worthy of supercar status. It is so visually arresting, so low, wide, squat, menacing, planted... that on looks alone it makes the grade. The interior is bespoke and sporty - quite unique and dramatic in its own right (tick that supercar box while we're at it) but it's the driving dynamics that really do justice to the car's supercar mantle.

The R8 V8, just missed making supercar status because writers said it could handle more power. Audi have set that right now.

Frankly, you're just blindly anti-Audi if you don't give the car the credit it deserves.

^ I don't care about the name supercar, exotic or sportscar... I was only pointing out where to place a 'supercar' among others. You don't even respond to the list I made ;)
Once again you start about me hating Audi, that has nothing to do with it and I would be really happy if you gave that a rest. You have seen among what cars I placed the R8 right? It's in the list with the best cars on the planet.

Tumbo, forget about the name and just look at the list I made and look if you agree with me where I have place the R8 (among the best cars in the world imo). I have seen the R8 V10 in action with my own eyes on the Nurburgring Nordschleife, and I know it's a crazy car. I might not like Audi as much as some of you, and am half half about the looks of R8, but I respect it's capabilities. 100 hp per liter isn't overly imperssive though (both engines)....

Stupid? Why? Also, no need to be sorry. We all know you're rude by now..

    What? You think that's impressive?

They would have escaped such sarcastic and sceptic criticism if they just put a Lamborghini badge on their R8.:D

The only criticism the Audi R8 gets is from BMW and their fans.

^^^ Constructive criticism is a good thing buddy! :D

So you got the conspiracy virus too?
    What a shame!

Let me get one thing out of the way then:
I hated the Audi R8 because I was insecure and afraid of it. Now I respect it and even like the looks. I have even seen the R8 V10 in hardcore action on the Nurburgring Nordschleife in real life with my own eyes, and it was bloody amazing to see. An eye opener even.
I hope BMW will come one day and counter this beast with something!

No man klier - don't be like that now. I don't have the "conspiracy virus". :(

You should know better of me by now. What I can tell you from my years of interacting on this website is that there is a ton of evidence of negative opinion being spread by BMW pundits against Audi and its sporting models. In particular, the "vanity project" Audi R8 has received vociferous criticism - not for what it can do or for what it looks like - but for cynical and envious reasons. And the comments were made over and over again.

klier, I'm a car enthusiast. In fact, I'm a performance car enthusiast. I don't car about the badge on the bonnet. I just like a good car for when it's a good car. Credit given where credit is due. That's me.

Who bitches about R8 and doesn't respect it for what it is - should drive a bicycle and never talk about cars again.
