No, it's not. The SMG gearbox in the M5 is an automated manual gearbox, in other words it makes use of most of the manual gearbox's internal mechanicals (constant mesh gears, synchromeshes, selector forks) coupled with a conventional clutch. The difference here is that its operation is robotised or automated by electro-hydraulic actuation. So, an electronic signal is received as an instruction for a gear change by the electronic control unit and this then triggers hydraulic devices to move gear selector forks and actuate the clutch. MCT is a regular Mercedes 7 speed automatic gearbox that makes use of the commonplace planetary or epicyclic gear sets to control gear ratio. What differentiates it is that now, a mechanical clutch connects the engine to gearbox as opposed to a torque convertor which connects the engine to the gearbox via transmission fluid (hence the term "slushbox"). As for the selection of gear ratios, the transmission operates in exactly the same way as the traditional autobox, using hydraulic pressure to engage and disengage the clutches linked to the various epicyclic gearsets.
Not at all. The MCT is unique. Developped by Mercedes and AMG in cooperation with Sachs. It's basicly a planetary gears slushbox with the torque converter replaced by a wet-clutch clutch in an oil bath. I couldn't clear it out, bit it seems to be a double-clutch, with seven discs in it. Maybe Martin could explain how exactly it works. So it gives a direct link to the motor, like a DSG, but has softer changes, while almost as fast (100ms) and also with no power interruption during the gearchange. It also allows to shift from 7th to 4th, or 5th to 2nd for instance (with adapted throttle-blip of course) directly, what is impossible with a DSG. It's considerably smaller and lighter than a DSG, DCT, DKG (according to MB at least) in regard to the torque it can transmit. It doesn't suffer from the hard starts (especially Race-Start function) like a DSG-like (AFAIK). It can cope with more torque than a DSG-like without getting ridiculously heavy and expensive. Hey i saw the pics last nite from my phone but they were to small to comment. Well i have now seen them properly and i can say this is a amazing looking AMG Mercedes Benz. Firstly i love the front i actually like the way the leds and bumper are i thhink it looks just awesome. The rear is amazing i actually like the rear more then the front at some angles and those exhaist pipes are just WOW To hussain congrats on your brilliant work and hope you can go back to Mercedes and help them with futre designs those are trully awesome. The interior is great i like the gear shift and those buttons around the gear lever.Also i do like the steering whell and those seats look awesome. Well one thing i dont like is the c class styled armrest but atleast its in leather so it should be softer the one in my c220cdi is way to hard. I agree with klier.. it`s almost too tame! (it`s the front end) It`s no way near as bold as the outgoing W211 E63. When I first saw the W211 E63 I was wowed by it`s boldness compared to the very tame E55 it replaced. This one just doesn`t excite me that well. comparo:

While new steel spring struts are used on the front axle, the rear suspension features AMG-specific air springs. A new, electronically controlled damping system automatically varies the damping characteristics according to the driving situation, reducing the roll angle of the body. The rear axle likewise has more negative camber, optimised elastokinematics and a new subframe mounting for greater stability at the physical limits. Newly developed power steering and individual 3-stage ESP® For more direct responsiveness, the speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion steering is also a new development. The steering ratio of 14 : 1 is 22 percent more direct than in the standard production models, while a more rigid steering column plus the reconfigured characteristic mapping of the speed-sensitive servo assistance ensure better steering precision and improved road contact. No it doesn't have 2 clutches, just 1 with multiple discs. Most wet clutches use multiple discs to overcome the lower coefficient of friction. Direct link to the motor is not something unique to DSG, all transmissions with out a torque converter offer that. And no MCT cannot deliver power with out interruption like a DSG/DCT, that requires 2 clutches (vs 1 with mutiple plates).

Yea I saw that too. May a bit of marketing hyperbole and what they really mean is no 'perceptible' interruption. Any way the very purpose of a clutch is to interrupt power supply so the idea of having uninterrupted power using a single clutch is AFAIK physically impossible. Dual clutch set ups gets around this by having 2 clutches and having 1 open and 1 closed.
