Official G-Class picture and article: http://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/...neuer_mercedes_offroader_es_g_voran.93379.htm So far it looks VERY VERY dissapointing. :crying6cc It has no class, presence, elegance...NOTHING that a benz should have. I see it appealing only to the American market.
hmm so this is it.. no pics from the front.. it looks allright from this angle but i cant give my final judgement yet.. i have to see more
I think it will sell very well anywhere - it's not only Americans who like SUVs - this thing will be an international success - and mark my words, a few months after it is on the market many of it's current detractors will be in love with it.
lol. Your probably right I am rnds. I'll probably be one of those who falls in love with it. :bonk: But right now, things are not looking good, and I am not impressed. Ahh well it's only one picture so far. The interior needs to be a step up from the M and R. More in line with the S.
I wish they'd refined the rugged Galdewagen concept instead of creating a desperate houswives favorite ride. The current G class is very spot on in almost every area apart from the awful windshield that gives off too much glare in the sun inside.

You guys seem to consistently miss the point of the G class, when you keep talking about it looking too common or looking to much like a ML, that it's too suburban or whatever etc. - The G class was never meant to be a style-statement - the new G class will absolutely out-perform it's predecessor in every area - it will be technically superior to any other SUV on the market - which can no longer be said of the current G class - it was the best but now it's only valid use is as an American status-symbol (based mostly on it's relative rarity in the US) 10 years ago the G class was only bought by a few European aristocrats to drive to their country estates in - now it jostles for space with all the other SUV's in the crowded suburban shopping mall car-parks of California. So when you complain that it is too common, just remember that in 1980 most other 4X4 vehicles looked much like the Geländewagen - it's now time for it to be replaced with something cutting edge and relevant to 2005.
Fair enough statement I am rnds, but in it lays the very problem with this new G-class, or so it seems, from all the spy pictures. The new G does NOT look cutting edge in any respect. At best its merely an average contemporary 4x4. It looks as though style leadership will rest firmly and safely with the Range Rover vehicles. While it may be bang up to date under the skin, even an innovator perhaps, its outer appearance suggests mediocrity.
But the original G class wasn't designed to stand out either - that is the very nature of the G class - it's a serious off-road vehicle at heart not a fashion statement - it has only recently become the Paris Hiltonmobile of the moment. The G class is practical and utilitarian - at least that's what it used to be - it's recent image as a Beverly Hills shopping cart is so superficial and completely undermines the very intention of such a vehicle - this was a semi-military vehicle once - now it gets it's eyebrows regularly waxed and carries a man-bag.
Lol gets it eyebrows waxed. :t-rot: They could kill two birds with one stone. Satisfy those who want a true 4x4 by making it the best offroader available. Satisfy the posers by making it a style statement, to some degree at least.
I wonder if this thing will debut with the new V8s from the S450 and S500 or the old standby V8s in the current R/ML500? From that pic (if it is official) it looks like just any other SUV you can name, mostly the Volvo XC90 and Lexus GX470. A shame. Hopefully the interior and capabilities will be up to snuff. M
i dont like it or maybe only from this angle , anyhow im not judging untill i see it all ... i dont think this is an oficial picture , thats just a PS , still too early
I just read that this isnt the replacement for Geländewagen (G-class). The picture we see is a new car called GL. GL is based on ML and R-class. I thought it was the replacement for the Geländewagen:
Damn tour bus they built. Looks like a Lexus 470. C'mon MB, if your gonna discontinue the model G, let it go completely dont embarass it with this thing!
I think the difference between the G and this new GL is that the new GL is supposed to be a competitor to big SUV’s (like the Ford Explorer, Lexus LX, Honda Pilot, and Lincoln Navigator). The G wasn’t as affordable as say the Explorer and maybe that’s why MB is building it.
Explorer and pilot are not big suv's... Honda doesnt have a nig SUV, and Ford has the Expedition, but still i dont know what they are going for. It doesnt look right... just an extension of the ML.
