I thought the new 335i was supposed to be faster and lighter than E90? Is anyone aware of any other tests getting similar results?
Why do you need a manual handbrake in the 3 series, really ? A manual handbrake can save your life in some cases of lost grip of the front wheels Not to mention it's a lot of fun
Well then explain why it's not present in the 5 and above? With modern ESP/DSC systems I don't agree that a manual handbrake is ever require to be used to save your life anymore, the single most logical reason for it's absence is cost. Personally it's not a deal breaker the lack of a electronic handbrake but the manual does look out of place at this price level don't you think.
The manual handbrake is the best reason to create friction to both drive wheels, when one has zero grip and the car is equipped with a normal, free differential. The other way is to rely on your ESP, but it doesn't always work
Why limit yourself to locking up the rear wheels only? Non ABS brakes FTW. ebrake = welcome to 2001 If it's good enough for porsche/ferrari/any decent car it's good enough for me. Sure it's good fun in a rental micra. Do you want to drive a micra? If you want ebrake you have to splash out for a higher end model not 1er/x1/3er...
Given the extensive development that goes into ESP/DSC system in every kind of weather, surface conditions I know which one I have most faith in when the shit hits the fan. BTW for me the handbrake is used to get the tail loose in the first place not to recover when it's already in that situation.
I'll have a manual handbrake on my BRZ. On a premium car I do not want it (anymore). We are in 2012. Maybe yet manual windows? You can open them if the car is locked in case the system brakes. LOL
When, for whatever the reason, you have stoped on an iced surface, and want to start moving again, it won't be easy with your stability program switched on.
I'm a professional race driver for near a decade now. Let's say that I have the opportunity to post on this forum, to breath and to do many other things because I've survived a crash with my E90 with DTC ON after loosing grip of the front wheels... thank god I had a hand brake to find some grip and stay on the road until I kill the speed enough before crashing... Reason for the crash, rear tires switched with the front tires by mistake in the auto service... After many drifts the tires weren't capable of making a turn on a cold asphalt surface with sand over it... @q5s: I simply don't get it why your talking about this stuff @Deckhook "BTW for me the handbrake is used to get the tail loose in the first place not to recover when it's already in that situation." ........OMG ! You loose grip of the rear axle to add some to the front
1st. Try breaking your window. 2nd. Try braking your rear wheels using your hands at some speed from inside the car. You can use gloves if you want Everybody here has a license, right ?
I did use the handbrake on my old Alfa 145 when the hydraulic system had a leak. But this should not happen on a brand new BMW.
Think BMW. Think BMW 3 series. The joy of driving. "The Ultimate Driving Machine” +“Sheer Driving Pleasure.” Its engineering, technology, performance....the essence of BMW 3 series ownership and the 'why' of it. What made the BMW 3series the icon it is and the emotions involved in the ownership of BMW's real world icon. Think high performance models i.e. M3 GTS.... Now then, think Klier. Think me and BMW enthusiasm, fanboy'ism and tradition. Think all the guys going to tract days in their either modified 3er's or M3's. OK Stop thinking. Now just say out loud what would have been said and how hardcore BMW 3er buyers would have reacted IF the F30 did not have a handbrake between the seats!? If the above does not make sense the either you haven't had the privilege of owning and enjoying a BMW 3 series sedan/coupe for the car / driving experience it offers and the essence of pure BMW driving pleasure.
It's hard to say, as a car fan, i'm perfectly OK with the F30 having manual handbrakes, but i've just approached a friend, their family recently purchased a F10 520i, one reason to have chosen that as opposed to a E class was, the BMW has superior technology (nothing about driving pleasure he mentioned), and one observation for that was because the F10 had e-brakes while the E doesn't (obviously that was wrong, but the E doesn't appear to have ebrakes because to release the e-brake, you still got to pull that traditional lever i believe, which makes it look manual). you see there are these kinda people buying BMWs now...
^ And me, from a BMW enthusiast point of view I do not expect the F10 to have a normal handbrake. Only the F30/F31 and F20's should have one. The F10 BMW 5 Series is THE most compromised "make every one happy" BMW. And from a 'board room' point of view that makes perfect sense, for the one simple reason it's the BMW Group's bread and butter car [Com-pro-mised in terms of BMW 'essence'.]
^ Sorry for not understanding your thinking here, the F10 should have it but the F30 shouldn't..... because????
The only mistake I've made is that I've trusted the mechanics not to do stupid mistakes But I doubt that you are experienced enough to understand this
