ateekt, I agree with you I just saw a Journey earlier today and the GL came to my mind first... they are almost the same but then again that doesn't make the GL a bad looking car :)

The thing is with all this ridiculous "it looks like this nonsense" is that in person the 2 vehicles in question look nothing alike. Just got back from NYC and they GL looks nothing like a Dodge Journey, at least to a sighted person. Just baseless, much ado about nothing.

Agreed, the new GL looks like one car only: the GL, by Mercedes Benz.

I agree it does look like a GL by Mercedes-Benz. It's also not a revolutionary departure by miles from the the previous gen GL.

There are some styling ques that relate to or are associated by the individual i.e.

And I can relate to that ^;)

So by association I can see LR VX and someone else may see Dodge, that does not mean it looks like.
No BMW, Audi or Benz looks like something else it's ALWAYS the other way around. Yet design or styling ques that looks ALIKE or REMINDS one off, may be more obvious as is the case with the GL. Which in my case is the tail lights of the LR VX.

What a 180 degree turn by M-B on the SUV's. Best SUV lineup around now. Hard for me to come to terms with that. Maybe Jeep taught them a few things after all.

I hope you're kidding about that Jeep part.

I'm not actually. Jeep aren't up to the technical superiority levels of M-B, obviously, but they are the historical SUV kings. The new GC is obviously so brilliant because it's a halfway ML practically underneath it all, but the way I see it, M-B had the keys to Jeep's SUV prowess and were able to develop a new SUV line putting their ultimate touch on it.

That doesn't make any sense at all. If Jeep isn't up to Mercedes-Benz then there is obviously nothing they can show them. If these were off road vehicles then you may have a point, then again you wouldn't because Mercedes builds an ultimate off road vehicle in the G-Class which can go anywhere a Jeep can. In short Mercedes didn't learn squat from Jeep this time around and like you say the Jeeps are better because of their association with Mercedes-Benz. The ultimate king of SUVs? What does that mean? That could be Jeep, Land Rover, Toyota's Land Cruiser or any number of similar vehicles.

    The ultimate family car :)
The next X5 better be amazing!

Maybe Jeep taught them to finally build SUV's that look butch and non feminine like SUV's should. ;)

Even the previous GL, that huge thing, looks soft and "motherly" for what it is. This new one and the new ML are like they got a shot of "how to build an SUV". Jeep have been building SUV's forever, and maybe their approach rubbed up on M-B a little. Whatever it is, something changed and M-B changed their SUV approach around.

Sorry K/A, but the new GL is clearly an evolution of the old one and the ML is also. They look nothing like Jeeps. These Mercedes' having nothing Jeep like about them in design, styling, or anything. Nothing has changed other than the fact that Mercedes has produced 2 great re-designs. The biggest improvements to both are in their interiors, something Jeep couldn't teach Mercedes squat about. Sorry, but here K/A you simply don't know what you're talking about.

Quite on the GL. thought it would blow up after official pics. Sadly it looks as if the new GL will suffer from some of the things that plaqued the old. I thought since phasing out the R, the GL would grow, and would have a proper 3rd row, and dual side egress. Instead it still has bench only and one can only access from the passenger side. Looks to be just like the last in that it is a duplicate cabin in shape and size to the ML. The problem is that full size SUV should also translate into rear legroom and access. Oh well, they will still sale and get a sizable premium over the ML.

Mercedes to unveil new GL-Class SUV at Alabama plant

By Dawn Kent -- The Birmingham News

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Mercedes-Benz will formally kick off production of the redesigned 2013 GL-Class at its Alabama factory next week. The "Job 1" celebration, which marks completion of the first customer-ready edition of the updated luxury full-size SUV, will be held June 28. Executives from Mercedes' home base in Germany are expected to attend the event at the Tuscaloosa County plant.

Planning for the second-generation GL-Class began more than three years ago. The new design, which debuted at the New York International Auto Show earlier this year, is longer, wider and taller than its predecessor, with a number of new features.

The 2013 GL goes on sale in September. Pricing has not been announced, but the 2012 models start at $62,445.

The Mercedes plant held a similar event last summer for the redesigned M-Class SUV.

G'damn that thing will be imposing on the roads. :D

I can't believe that I support M-B's newest SUV designs over many of its newest car designs. This is blasphemy!
