It does have very similar details indeed, even more-so than the ML, which kind of looks like a raised up Wagonized E itself.

However, I think the GL's body is more well versed to mesh with the organic/soft elements, and in fact, it's probably the only things I could find slight fault on with the design (though, well executed enough to not be a big issue). The E's body is much straighter and more angular I think than this GL, as the GL has some softer elements, like the bendier greenhouse, BMW-inspired rear end, etc.

The star size isn't a cost issue.

Then a manufacturing issue? Or a heritage/sacredness issue?

It has to be one, because as far as I know, they use the same exact Star for every Star-grille, regardless of the size and proportion of the cars front.

ML & GL never got the good attention they deserve for off roading, they are really more capable than any other German SUV. Something I witnessed my self. The last ML did surprizingly great in the dunes compared to X5/X6. They had the proper harness, low transfer case and clever traction control systems, although on very little rubber which is wrong for sand.

I am keeping an eye on this or the new ML. I love that they are rare, well designed and well priced too.

on real-life photos rear looks better! Anyway, will it has full-LED headlights? And I can't see, rear-lights are LED?

Imo this car is too long and requires big wheels to disguise somehow its dimensions.

I considered current GL to be rather too long too, but this one seems to be even longer.
OTOT, current GL is too narrow for its length ( i think in general all MBs are narrower than competition), I understand that it makes car more maneuvarble, but still, at some angles it looks strange.

They should have made shorter version of this GL, instead of ML, i think it'd look much better.

That extra LED stripe in the middle of the headlight unit, and the full lenght bottom stripe really helps balance the whole design. No longer the upper "eyebrow" seems dominant nor the main reflector lost in the middle of universe.

After so many ugly headlights, finally Mercedes made a pretty one.
Is the first Merc I'm really liking, since W212. The interior is awesome (as in all recent Mercs)

    Regards!

different version fors US and Europe

It seems that the US will get GL450 and GL550 and Europe only GL 500. The GL 550 will have 320kw and the european GL 500 only 300kw.

^ Europe takes the middle road apparantly...

An ML/GL63 would fit perfectly in your garage.:)

Hadn't heard anything on the engine. Is that a new direct injection engine or the same 450? I don't see any blue efficiency badging. Never understood why the US never got the 450 engine in any other offerings. The S-class for example. Many S-class buyers are not interested in 400+ HP. 300 to 350 is more than they will ever use. I thought MB missed a lot of market penetration with the S for this reason.

If I was just glancing at the front, can't say I would notice it that much over the current. The tail lights are too big. And I am utterly sick of Mercedes headlights that run up onto the upper hood surface. If you took off the eyebrow area and replaced by continuing the sheet metal over this area, it would look better, IMO. Love to see someone photoshop that.

pricy for me bro and not practical if I want to bash it :)

Live photo's a little more lukewarm, and there's just soooo much BMW in the rear end there (M-B admitting something?).

However, and I can't believe that I'm saying this, as I always despised M-B SUV's, not only for their inclusion into the brand, but because they always looked lousy and uncharacteristic (like they are wearing "We are American Benzes" on their head), however M-B now have possibly the most solid and strongest SUV brotherhood on the market, at least the German market. Interesting turn of events for them.

Same engine as the GL550, but detuned to 362hp. This is the perfect solution IMO. I was wondering what they were going to do with the 450 model. This one is going to really sell now. The AMG package is a real looker.

Can anyone explain me why if the 4.7 V8 can produce 435 PS MB downgrades it to 408 when the competitors have or are about to have more power? They seem uncapable of doing things right, they lost the lead in the engines department and don´t seem to be able to take it again in the middle term.

What in the world are you talking about? The GL450 has 362, up from 335 and the GL550 has 429hp, up from 382.

The lower tuned version of the 4.7 V8 engine is for the CLS, E, and ML550 models. They all have 402hp.
