Possible competition for AM DB9, MB CL, BMW M6 etc.???

I am not aware of this being an approved PAG board project yet.
But then again, where there is smoke....and so forth...

Porsche to put out a new front-engine coupe in 2011. The upcoming four-door Panamera spawns a two-door GT.

    November 2006

The 928, Porsche’s front-engine entry in the coupe GT market, never quite enjoyed the success of the signature sports car, the 911. Since Porsche stopped producing the 928 in 1995 after an 18-year run, the German automaker has gone without a front-engine coupe to compete with the likes of the BMW M6, Jaguar XKR, Aston-Martin DB9, and Mercedes CL-class. The 911, which remains much more the pure sports car than any of the coupes, has gradually moved farther upmarket and provides a sporting alternative to those cars, but it now appears that Porsche is developing a more direct competitor for the front-engine GTs, a coupe that sources suggest will be in showrooms by 2011. Porsche might even name it the 928.

Built on the platform that will underpin Porsche’s 2009 Panamera four-door sports sedan, the unnamed two-door will ride on a shorter wheelbase but will share at least 60 percent of its parts with the Panamera. The sedan’s control-arm front suspension and multilink rear will likely get firmer tuning in keeping with the coupe’s sporting pretense. The shorter wheelbase will reduce the coupe’s weight and improve its handling, but the reduction will come at the expense of rear-seat space. As in the 911, the back seats will likely only be suitable for children, insolent teens, and mothers-in-law.

0611_upf_porsche_side.jpgCoupe buyers will choose from a selection of Porsche’s next-generation direct-injection-equipped V-8 engines. The Cayenne SUV will also get these new V-8s. Power is expected to be about 350 horses upward, with turbo versions making in excess of 500. There are rumors regarding a possible 6.0-liter V-10, which would reportedly make about 650 horsepower. Transmission choices should mirror those found in the Panamera — a seven-speed, dual-clutch DSG in the automatic role and a six-speed manual for those who insist on traditional shifting. There are no plans for an all-wheel-drive version. Like the 928 that preceded it, this coupe will be rear-wheel drive, with a transaxle helping to balance weight distribution.

Pricing for this front-engine Porsche will likely begin where the naturally aspirated 911’s leaves off, a base version of the coupe going for about $100,000, with prices of higher-horsepower versions rising quickly into the rare $150,000-plus stratosphere, where the Bentley Continental GT rules."

    Thanks Donau!

Personally, i'd like to see the Cayenne's V8 carried into this vehicle. That way you could have the standard version with 345 PS and the Turbo with 450 PS.

I don't want them to just make cool cars, I also want them to stay in business

I second that. However it seems to me that Porsche is becoming mainstreem, like BMW. I think were going to see porsche move to a BMW like company in the next decade. In fact investing in porsche as a long term investment might be a good idea. I wouldnt mind seeing porsche and BMW merge...that would be pretty wild.
    (sorry im broadcasting) ;)
This would be a great M6 competitor. Those PS's are really good looking.

So the 928 would be an M6 competitor
and the Panamera an M5 competitor.

My thinking goes along the lines of those of ojis and Matt. They have the potential of really looking great and I think Porsche is becoming more mainstream. I think that was part of Wendelin Wiedeking's charge when he was hired - in order to sell more cars obviously.

Matt, I think you hit the nail on the head with the 928 - 6 - series and Panamera - 5 series comparison, with the most powerful versions of each going against the M5 and M6.

I'm 99% sure that there will be a new 928. Porsche is investing loads of money into the Panamera and they will utilize its compotents and platform as much as possible. Somehow I'm thinking of the 928 as a slightly more comfortable and luxurious Porsche, which is somewhere in the middle between a 911 and CL63. Like an answer to Ferrari and their 599GTB.
The gap between the 911 and the CGT is very big and I think that new 928 should be the car to keep customers ready to spend 150-250k on a two door coupe steping inside Porsche dealers.

If you make good cars, everything else will go just fine.

Well, VW Phaeton is a great car but the sales have never been too good.

BUt there is a difference in image. When people think VW, they don't think Phaeton. When people think Porsche, they think of amazing drivers' cars in various incarnations, 911, 928, CGT.

Personally I would rather see a new 928 over a 4-Door car, but like others have astutely mentioned, Porsche needs to evolve as a brand in order to survive. Relying on 911s, Boxters and Cayennes isn't going to cut it with all the competition. If they can compete in new segments and bring out some awesome products, who's to complain? A V-10 928 sounds like an awesome idea to me!

I love it already ...I hope it looks just like that (y)

The 928 will also be looking to take on the CL63/65 -- the old Mercedes SEC/CL was the old 928s main competition. I think you will find the Panamera will cost a lot more than the M5 -- closer to the S65 I would think.

The 928 is far closer to the Ferrari 612 Lu (only much better priced), it is a large GT car ..with room in the rear for luggage. The 928 is "The Gentleman's Porsche" like the 612 is "The Gentleman's Ferrari".

Re: The next Porsche 928??? - (Car and Driver - mag)

I beleive the new 928 will be very close to the 599GTB and this is why: The 911 has an asking price of around 750k which isn't car from the slightly cheaper Cayman S. The Panamera will start at around 70-85k. That means that Porsche will have three cars with an asking price ranging from 70-85k. To avoid more in house competition and confused customers, it would be a disaster if Porsche build another 80-90k car. With that being said I beleive that the new 928 will very expensive to prevent it from leeching 911 sales.
More over the CGT production has ended leaving Porsche with no "ultra Prestige car" in the 200k spectrum.
Those are my two cents, eventually we will get to see how things will pan out.

I was not talking about price Lu, I was talking about the type of car the 928 is .....but I do agree with you, the 928 will be very expensive -- although the old model was slightly cheaper than the 911 Turbo.

I would expect the new 928 to cost about the same as the CL63.

What you said is corerct rob. Cars like the 928 and 599gtb are smiliar to the Vanquish. Suited for rich Wall Street dudes who want something comfortable, exotic and easy to live with. But the GTB is just marvelous:
