BMW to Debut New 3.0-liter Twin Turbo Diesel with 306HP on 735d

BMW has confirmed the development of a new and more powerful version of its acclaimed 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged straight-six diesel engine. The new 3.0-litre TwinPower Turbo diesel unit that churns out a maximum output of 306 horsepower at 4,400 rpm with a peak torque of 600 Nm or 442 lb-ft at just 1,500 rpm, will replace the current 3.0-liter inline-six diesel in the 735d, 335d, X5 35d etc that produces 286HP at 4,400 rpm and 580Nm or 428 lb-ft at 1,750 rpm.

The Bavarian automaker supports that while the new engine is more powerful than its predecessor, at the same time it offers some 4 percent lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions - not bad. BMW said that the 3.0-litre TwinPower Turbo diesel will make its premiere on the 735d later on this year with other models following soon after.

Perfect engine for the F01!!! So this would be my choice…must be drive like hell - after all the positive results for the 730d already…

I would also surely go for this engine in the F01. Diesel is king for this type of vehicle.

From the official press release ...

    Great. Fantastic even. A 3.0 liter bi-turbo diesel with 306 hp/600 Nm. The 745d 3.0 tri-turbo will have around 360 hp...

And the 7er finally gets the 8 speed automatic it seems Eni?? Good! Shoud've been there from the start on all engines, but starting with a 300 hp diesel is ok too ;)
And I thought it was the case but I forgot....did the 8 speed have a start-stop function???

    7er already features 8-speed gearbox - in 760i / 760Li models.
7er Hybrid will be next - incl. Automatic Stop-Start function, which is a feature the new gearbox is capable of.
But it will be initially introduced in Hybrid models.

    BMW marketing tonsils.

Now they're calling everything with a "twin-something" turbo "TwinPower". So, the new twinscroll, single turbo in the petrol 3.0 is TwinPower and this new multi-stage dual-turbo arrangement is so-called too.

We need more information on this. Is this the latest in the 35d (M57TU2D30) engine technology that featured multi-stage, sequential turbocharging? Do they now combine this concept with twin-scroll turbocharging? Certainly seems that way...

Yes, now everything is TwinPower Turbo :D
There will be MultiPower Turbo as well ... soon enough.

    Soon.

My sources say the new engine will be premiered together with xDrive - in a single model. Expect M Sports pack introduction in the same time as well. And Hybrid model is also somewhere there. There is certainly much going on in the 7er field. :D

Thanks EnI, so now tell me, will the next single turbo straight six diesel get twin-scroll tech? If so, they'll call in a TwinPower unit too. So then how will Tycoon tell his pals that his car has two turbos when everything's called TwinPower? ;)

Oh,man..it´s incredible what diesel technology can deliver today.Personally, this engine is perfect for F01.Power,torque and consumption levels are indeed great :eusa_clap.

Many don't know even today that it's a TT diesel (my car), but rather ask if it's 3.5L...:jpshakehe :D

How they call it is not important, it's how it performs that matters...;)

    :t-cheers:

"How they call it" is important to me. It shows an attention to detail. The don't need to mention it on the car itself a la xDrive / sDrive but at least call it what it is in the press pack info. TwinPower. Really.

The next thing they'll be doing something diabolical like TSI! ;)

Turbo tech is developing & changing with a speed of light these days.

So, that would mean marketing names would have to be changed eg. every year or two - but BMW opted for a consistency & consolidation. TwinPower Turbo will be used in the future - for all the encanced turbo engine (eg. twinscroll, twin turbos etc) ... MultiTurbo Power label is considered to be used for all the future multi-tech turbo engines etc.

Mind that BMW always used "i" for all possible petrol engines, and "d" for all diesel engines. No matter what tech has been used behind.

    :t-cheers:

TSI etc is typical VAG domain.
Be sure TwinPower label combined with simple "i" or "d" trademarks makes more sense to vast majority of customers than cryptic labels / trademarks like "TSI" , "TFSI", "CGI", "CDI", "TSDI" etc.

BMW to introduce more powerful and efficient version of twin-turbo 3.0-liter diesel

BMW has just announced an upgraded version of its 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder diesel engine. The new version retains the same displacement, yet output for the European spec version is increased from 286 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque to 306 hp and 442 lb-ft. At the same time, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are reduced by four percent compared to the previous version.

BMW has updated the fuel injection system to its latest generation common rail system. That means the injector pressure has been bumped from 1,600 BAR (23,000 psi) to 2,000 BAR (29,000 psi), allowing for even more precise metering of the fuel flow. The dual stage turbocharger system is now also more efficient. Since BMW only just introduced a version of the previous engine with U.S. legal after-treatment systems in late 2008, it seems unlikely that the U.S. will receive the upgrades in the near future.

Thanks HoH, given that this engine is being discussed at length in this thread I have taken the decision to merge your thread with this one.

I do wonder if the U.S. will get this engine. Yikes the numbers are staggering. A 335d with this engine could render the 335i pointless from some buyers here.
