    Mercedes readying Audi R8 competitor?

The Audi R8 supercar won't be unveiled until late September, but Mercedes is already planning a competitor to the high-performance two-seater, according to a report by Germany's Auto Motor und Sport. Like the R8, the new Mercedes will feature a mid-engine configuration. Power could come from a version of the AMG division's new 6.2-liter V8. Rumors of a Mercedes model fitting this description first surfaced in 2004. However, the then-rumored 2008 Mercedes P8 was expected to cost around $200,000. Reports later surfaced that the project had been cancelled. If AMS is right, it would seem Mercedes has revived its mid-engine sports car program, but this time the $100,000 Audi R8 and the Porsche 911 will be the target, rather than the Lamborghini Gallardo or Ferrari F430. A production version of the car isn't expected until 2010.

    Interesting.

German Mid-engine supercars boom on horizon.

I'm eager to see BMW response. Many are tempted by making a supercar - for the ego & the image, but mojority of heads are still cool enough to not be blown away by such temptations. Such a low-volume with BMW badge car would need too much resources - it would never pay off. While RR brand is not suitable for a supercar.

    But ...

BMW Group are more & more aware there is a gap in their brand portfolio. With MINI they are covering the lower end of premium segment, with BMW they are covering the middle, Rolls-Royce is at the highest end of the segment. But a "bridge brand" between BMW & RR (covering upper premium segment)is missing. Bentley was mentioned to be such a bridge (having plan of purchasing both brands): while RR have been planned to be very exclusive (with Phantom & Corniche), Bentley would offer smaller sedans, cabrios & coupes - even a possible supercar. But Bentley is now in VW hands. The Bentley plans are burried forever.

Yet recently BMW AG have put their eyes on Aston Martin (in Ford ownership) - and monitoring closely the Ford situation. Not that AM is on sale , but Ford is considering various PAG solutions, and one never knows when Ford will start to sell their crown jewles. And in such case BMW AG will be ready to take an action. Marketing dept. is daydreaming, but the BoD has already scanned the SB mood on such a theorethical situation ...

IMO AM would fit perfectly between BMW & RR brands: offering exclusive premium sports cars (coupes, cabrios, roadsters, small sedans , and a possible mid-engine supercar), and being perfect Bentley, Maserati & Porsche fighter.

Let's see what the future will bring ... Let's hope dreams come true ... :D

OMG, I can only think about it, an AM with upcoming twin-clutch, CB, ASF, and the derestricted S85 V10 and S70/2/3 V12 (used McLaren F1/LM, LM V12). :t-drive:
It would be like, bye - bye Porsche/Lambo/Ferrari/Maserati, sorry can't stay behind such "slow pokes" with their "wimpy engines" who never won any IEOTY awards. :D :D :D

If you're going to pay attention to rumors that make ink in Auto Motor und Sport you mind as well believe the prophetic visions I recieve every time I drink rubbing alcohol with Xanax (France will start a premtive war with China after Jean-Marie Le Pen single-handedly corners the world's gold market).

Like... I'm also eagerly awaiting the Audi personal rockeship and the BMW M lawnmower.

AUDI expands forcing BMW and MB to reconsider

    Associated Press-OCT 25

This just in. Audi to begin manufaturing ships, civial aircrafts, and trains in order to take up more of the world market. Since Audi produced their magnificent sports super car, they have begun the analysis of building ships in order to support this ever growing market. Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, and Carnival Cruise line have no comment on this but do say that there are "talks" taking place. In addition to this Audi is planning on helping Airbus in purchasing the company for 12.5 billion dollars, breaking it into pieces, selling it, starting a new company and begin competiting with Boeing. Audi has made great strides in the automotive industry wih their new R8. Who's to say that MB and BMW won't follow? Whether they do or dont, they will be the last in line since Audi has taken the crown.
