I really hope someone will be able to snap some shots of the interior.
As far as I know I only have seen 2 of the interior.

I'll miss the old fold down headrests in the back seat. I know it's such a small detail, but for me it was something very typical Merc. Maybe it gives you more space in the trunk.

Yeah the W212 lost that feature after the W211 as well. I think it has to do with how they've straightened the rear glass out on modern designs, and pushed the greenhouse back further toward the trunk. It's a less functional approach in regards to giving the rear headrests space to fold back.
  4. Tigrelle Member

I do not know the current situation in the W212 as K-A mentioned but in the W221 you can still adjust your headrest, or is that just for the up-down movement.

I think they're talking about the rear head rests Tigrelle. I think it is nothing more than a cost saving technique. Nothing more. It's a lot cheaper to stick them into the seats than put in the motorized lift.
  6. Tigrelle Member

I know they are talking about the rear-headrests, but I am a 100% sure the W221 still has them motorized.

The new ones are motorised ... but they just kinda drop straight down and rest on the seat top... rather than fold back flat into the parcel shelf.

Really? I didn´t know that. Is this new system available is some other recent MBs?
  9. Betty Swollocks Well-Known Member

All the E-Class's I've had recently had the folding rear headrests which went backwards at the touch of a button on the dashboard.
  10. SKYSONY Well-Known Member

    W212 you mean?.
  11. Athan Active Member

No the 'drop' function to release the headrests into their stowed position has been available on previous generation E-Classes. This feature has since been on the W210, and maybe even before.
  12. Betty Swollocks Well-Known Member

    Yes.
  13. klier Member

Maybe that option is not available in the U.S?

BTW, I´ve been told the SLC AMG engine, a 4.0 V8 TT with 510 PS will be comming to the W222 as well. It will compete with the next evolution of the 4.4 V8 from BMW which should raise its output up to 490 PS.

I'm sure it will be more economical then the current AMG engines.
But I'm still wondering, will the V12 return?
A lot of people including some on this forum say: ''ofcourse it's part of Mercedes''.
The first Merc. with a V12 was the W140 600SE(L) but in the past 21 years the
amount of econazi's has increased (unfortunately)
I think (but do not hope) the V12 will be pulled out of production and will be replaced by
    turbocharged V8 engines.

    The 4.0 V8 will be the S500.

About the V12, the new 600 Pullman is going to have one, that´s for sure. But I don´t know if the S-Class will have one.
  17. Pagani Active Member

The V12 [AMG] returned for the SL, so there will almost certainly be an S65 AMG. The S600 is similarly likely if they update specs to at least surpass the non-performance 63 AMG

Don't forget that the S-Class is the 'trendsetter', any changes Mercedes might make will be experienced first by the customers of a new S-Class.

Me too, I'm dying to see the interior. But I think so far, this rendering a member here did of it is pretty much it:
We've seen the new speedo and COMAND screen. COMAND controller wrist rest is from the ODC.
From this shot you can see the round AC vent, which should be coated or metal IMO, but it looks cheap from this shot. Like the four in the center we've seen in previous shots. Why couldn't they give it the ones in the ODC?
I personally don't like the location of the light switch either:

Looks like the W222 is in the US:

You always give the impression that these newer MB designs are "flawed."
Who gave you the golden book on automotive design forms and how designs are to be translated. I`d really like to know.
If you believe you can do a better job than the designers at hand, be my guest. If you do get the job, your formula most likely would not work for the newer generation MB buyer. You over-analyze too much with things you simply don`t understand as a whole. Remember this, automotive designs are not only art forms, thay are about schemes as well and the new S has plenty of them.

One of the basic design elements you must understand about the new S-Class is that it is not a completely wedge shape
as you have stressed numerous times in this thread. It starts out that way with the hood line then drops off at the rear door and boot lid from profile view. It is clearly anti-wedge and more upright like it`s sister the CLS.
Secondly, the dropping line is not only an art form. It is a design scheme to make the S look more compact and trim.
The W221 S-Class has a wedge shaped dropping line which makes it look more compact and trim compared to the BMW 7-Series and Audi A8 (whos` designers wanted their cars to look large with intent.) The S-Class doesn`t need to shout. I couldn`t imagine how huge the W221 S-Class would look without it`s profile line. It would look like a huge tank. That simple line tones it`s mass down quit a bit. The current E-Class also has these schemes to make the car appear more compact.
