British engineering powerhouse McLaren is set for a head-on collision with German specialist AMG as the two Mercedes satellite companies go toe-to-toe in the supercar market.
In a world exclusive, Autocar has learned that both McLaren and AMG are developing mid-engined, V8-powered supercars, both of which will appear on the market in 2010, and which will compete as rivals.
This supercar grudge match has been years in the making, flaring up after the controversial gestation of the £240,000 Mercedes McLaren SLR in 2004.
Inside sources say that ever since the launch of the carbon-bodied UK-built machine, AMG has been lobbying Mercedes to be given the chance to build a bespoke supercar for its parent company.
Now, it looks like AMG is going to get that chance, but that won’t stop Brit outfit McLaren forging ahead with its plan for its own, V8-powered alternative
The McLaren is likely to be called the F2, while the AMG version could get the Mercedes SLC moniker – and you can read the latest on both by clicking below.

Interesting tactic .....I wonder what they aim to achieve by it.

So will the F2 be the natural successor to the F1 .....or just another golf club carrier?

They say it will be the real thing ...I certainly hope so.

    Who said that? :t-hands:

Plus, if you ask me, i think that noone, NOONE deserves the jewels that come out from Munich. BMW Powered McLaren was long time ago and was a different story, but a successful one i must admit, but regardless, i don't want to see it today.

I doubt it, but if it ever happens, my money is on the McLaren - may be they will make a true successor to the F1 instead of the SLR.

    lol it was a joke..
yes munich jewels should stay in munich(y)

My stars I can't wait to see what happens with this. I wonder what Mercedes will do if both of them come up with something truly special? We all know AMG and McLaren can build a hella sports car. I guess there is no chance of them working together huh? No of course not after the SLR near-debacle. A concept already in time for Geneva, things gonna get interesting real fast folks.

I figured as much. That means the next round of AMG cars will be the E60, SL60 etc, but with more hp and more importantly more torque than the current naturally aspirated 6.2L version of this engine. I guess a beefed-up version of the 7G-tronic will debut at this time or some other type of transmission like a DSG? No way they're going to go back to the old 5-speed in the current V12 AMG cars!!

****************Uh....did any of you guys notice that Autocar has this ---> "04 Jul - Mercedes C63 AMG" listed on their main page indicating a test drive of the yet to be released C63 AMG? ******************

ahh hell no..i cant complain about the Zonda Engine..
while you are saying that No one deserves an Munich engine..and should be glad if they get one..
im saying that AMG should be glad they have the chance to work with Pagani..

    its to opposite:D

I guess you love BMW more than I love MB:D..haha

Good-Bye McLaren: Mercedes Partners With AMG on New SLC Supercar
AFFALTERBACH, Germany — Following a decision to discontinue its project to build the midengine McLaren F2, Mercedes is instead moving forward with a different car to be built by AMG.

Mercedes originally partnered with McLaren Automotive to produce the 617-horsepower Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, and the $450,000, 200-mph supercar was launched in 2005. The car's development didn't go smoothly, as McLaren bridled under the requirement to create a front-engine car, while AMG wanted to build the car itself, not just the engine.

The cheaper, midengine F2 was supposed to be developed by McLaren once the SLR project reached production, but the project was halted in late 2004. Mercedes is certainly no stranger to midengine cars, as it unveiled its three remarkable C111 experimental cars in 1969 at the Frankfurt auto show and then raced at Le Mans in the 1990s with the CLK-GTR and CLR.

Mercedes has now decided to go its own way with what is being called the Mercedes SLC. The SLC will be lighter and smaller than the SLR, and is expected to be powered by a new, turbocharged 6.2-liter V8 built by AMG. The new supercar might share parts with the future SL Black Series, reducing the financial burden of the engineering costs.

The new car will be engineered by HWA, a racing company established by Hans Werner Aufrecht, one of the founding partners in AMG, which was acquired by Mercedes in 1999. HWA is located in Affalterbach, the same small town where AMG builds its special editions for Mercedes.

Mercedes expects to unveil the SLC concept at the 2008 Geneva Auto Show, and if all goes well, production will begin near Stuttgart as early as 2009. Meanwhile, the midengine McLaren F2 will now be a solo effort by the racing company's automotive division at the elaborate McLaren Technical Center in Woking, England.

What this means to you: The Mercedes SLR McLaren has turned out to be the supercar no one wanted; now AMG is getting its chance to prove that it can build a better car than the McLaren.

    OK..
I dont care if this is just some lies.. made up by someone..or exxagerations..
This makes me warm inside.. and soo happyy:D

    haha

    Again Mclaren_P10 from carspyshots:

HWA has started plans of a hypercar, that was apart of the plan for Mercedes-AMG, but has since changed to a HWA hypercar powered by Mercedes-AMG. The plan is for a car with weight close to 2900 lbs. The car would feature a carbon fiber monocoque chassis, with carbon fiber body panels. the engine would be a HWA race tuned quad-turbo version of the AMG V-12 producing as much as 1198 BHP, this engine has now been scrapped due to the new AMG V-12 coming in 2010. The plan has changed to the new hypercar using a twin-turbo version of the AMG 6.2 liter V-8 prodcing as much as 1098 BHP. The car would be a mid-engine hypercar, with power goign to the rear wheels via a new MCT 8 speedtwin clutch transmission. The codename for this project is Autobahn Stormer. The plan has gottne a huge push as of late by Jurgen Herbert of the HWA Supervisiorary Board!

About the only things that realistically enthuses me is the bit talking about a new AMG V12 coming in 2010. The quoted 1100 hp power figure for the TTV8 is unrealistic to an AMG that has said that the Black Series SL would be about how high we can go for power. Though, it would confirm previous roumors of a 1,000 hp engine that have been around for some time. And, the AMG chief did say in a not too cryptic and a bit devilish manner, in a video interview I saw recently, that "who knows what we may decide to bring out in the future...." So, exciting stuff nonetheless!

    HWA? Don´t know them.
  20. bum-man Well-Known Member

They are the DTM racing branch of Mercedes. They also gave us the CLK-DTM and probably had a part in a few of the Black Series cars.

Imagine a chassis tuned by HWA, an engine supplied by MercedesPerformanceEngines, a Mclaren SMG gearbox, and styling and luxury done by AMG. Now that is the ultimate in Mercedes fanboy wetdream right there. :)
