I think only Saab would allow you to switch of everything off except the speedo to reduce glare or something like that. So since your W140 isn't a Saab, take it to your dealer...

Most likely the bulbs in your dash need replacement. Changing them is fairly easy, however the real trick is removing the cluster to get to them.. There's special tools/hooks from Daimler specifically designed for this, but even if you have them, you'd have to be very careful cause you could end up cracking the dashboard trying to remove it.

If you are willing to do this yourself, make sure you have the right tools before attempting it; otherwise my suggestion would be to take it to a repair shop that specializes in German cars (they'll most likely have the right tools or will get them to get the job done).
Or, you can try your local Mercedes-Benz dealer, however you may end up paying a premium for it.

Stay clear of dealers. Learn how to do it yourself and if you can't be bothered, try a good mechanic. Just stay very clear of dealers.

Oh and btw, look what I found.

    Good luck!

Pull the cluster and check all the bulbs and check for anything that is disconnected/broken.
