Help in choosing X5M vs RR Sport

Hi guys and girls, just curious for an opinion. I am completely stuck on a decision to the point where I think I should just flip a coin.. I know this is a German car fan forum, but what would you choose:
    1. Brand new 2012 Range Rover Sport HSE Lux Diesel (fully specced)
    or
    2. Pre-owned 2011 BMW X5M with 16,000Km's on the clock

The Rangie is very comfortable and loaded with extras. It's brand new and very economical compared to the X5M.
The BMW is much faster but drinks like a fish and the new model is a year or so away. We have a roadster for fun drives and I am more into comfort. But yes, the X5M will be awesome..

    Thanks!

Is the RR Sport the V8 diesel? If so then yes, RR sport. If it's just the two of you then why a big SUV? What about a top of the line diesel X6? That's an interesting change up from the 535i...

I really don't have much experience with RR, but I will ask the question: which is the best value proposition?

I am an X6M owner, before I had a X6 50i. First the X6M weighs 115kg's more than the 50i, pros are very fast, refined and comfortable. Cons are very thirsty and then there is the M-factor, its a sports car dressed up as an SAV so forget any off the beaten track stuff, and it does suffer from understeer at speed.

Living with the car on a daily basis? I can't tell, I use it mainly on weekends. That said I honestly don't know if I can live with my own car on a daily basis, simply because my pockets aren't deep enough. The tyres on this thing are too expensive, fuel is too expensive and clocking up unnecessary miles just ad to massive depreciation!

Thus, if you can afford it (not planning any off road driving) it's a joy! But me, I am down scaling and the next M3 will suit me better.;)

    Thanks guys..
Martin, it isn't the V8 - it's the twin-turbo 3l V6. They've dropped the V8 diesel in the Sport, it was an old engine. The new 4.4l V8 diesel in the big body might make it to the Sport in about a year and that would be awesome but I can't wait that long. We need an SUV for the dogs - 3 of them :) We have an X5 with motorplan about to expire (so 3 cars which is a waste of money) and want to trade the 535i and X5 on one SUV. I'm actually sad to see my F10 go, it is the best car I have ever owned from a "personal fit" perspective. What REALLY appeals to me is the new X5 M50d, but that's a long wait and no trade-in assistance. My 535i cost me R800K in Sep 2010 (it is fully loaded) and BMW offered me, wait for it... R480K. It only has 22,000 Km's on it.

Chonkoa - the RR Sport is the best value proposition as it is fully loaded and by far the most capable 4x4. Not that I'm planning a trip to Mozambique or anything..

Human - thanks for your views. I do very little mileage (14,000 -16,000Km/year) so I think the X5M will be liveable. Although I will be poorer when I retire if I purchase it ;-) I will only be getting to test drive it on Saturday - if you could please just let me know one thing - is the power steering a tad too heavy? We have a pre-facelift X5 4.8i and the power steering is tediously heavy..

    Thanks guys :) !
I think I'm leaning towards the Rangie.... But who knows what will happen when I drive the X5M!

Probably not, the depreciation on a brand new RR is probably going to be way worse than a used X5M. Just something to look into. Happy shopping :cheers.

Hi JLBM good luck with your choice...I would take the diesel personally due to consumption...i am suprised howmuch you loosing on you 5 i got a E350 Cdi i am even scared to get a valuation after reading that.

Thanks JLBM, yeah totally forgot that the V8 diesel in the Rangie was replaced by the twin-turbo JLR V6. Ok, dogs and SUVs are a perfect match for each other... :)

First up, let me be honest and say that I'm the last person to recommend sportier SUVs; for instance I am very critical of an X5 with M-Sport package with unyielding suspension, ridiculously wide tyres and enormous rims with low-profile slicks of rubber. I'm just against them because they're big, rolling cathedrals of contradiction. Surely something that big and bulky should also be comfortable and cosseting? They're not.

Conversely, I'm nothing short of a massive fan of non-sport package X5 3.0d and 4.0d models. I'd personally go for the standard wheel size, forgoing the (nothing but) aesthetic benefits of bigger rims and revel in the silky ride quality over the worst of Joburg's roads. And, as a lifestyle (read: off the beaten track) vehicle the higher sidewalled tyres would be far less prone to punctures on dirt roads. The tyres are also much cheaper than the sporty versions.

So there, this isn't advice, I just wanted to share my views on luxury SUVs. I know that you're a big fan of BMWs but what about VW's terribly overlooked and very smart new Touareg?

Thanks Martin, I feel the same way and prefer comfort and sensible tyres and rims. There isn't much trade in assistance with new x5's - although the 40d really appeals to me.. What I like about the range rover is the classic styling which won't bother me too much if a new model comes out soon, unlike the x5.. Thanks for your contributions guys.. By Tuesday I will come to a decision :)

    You're more than welcome!(y)

Really not at all. It's well weighted and easy steering at low\park speed, needles to say the steering response and feedback is pure BMW.

60% depreciation on your 5er yet you have only had the car for 1.5 years and barely driven 22 000KM!? That is just staggering. I can see why some people prefer to driver their cars down to the ground instead of replacing them with something new.

I would have gone for the RR, but the new one is also just around the corner. Tough call.

    X5M :) Drive one

Tough one. Maybe RR because it's brand new (if you care about that.... I like when I've been the only one responsible for my car, though it isn't exactly a total make or breaker).

We have a brand new X5 ///M sitting on our lot right next to a brand new M6 convertible in San Marino Blue. I took the X5 M to get gassed up and my god does it move. It's also very comfy.

Sounds like an expensive garage queen, is it really that bad??

In fact it's a masterpiece of engineering, for me a sight to behold and a true power crazed driving machine! But tyres and feul is expensive. If you wanna own one of these and enjoy it on a daily basis/commute you gotta have the money - so that it doesn't worry you if the tyres needs to be replaced, fuel gauge reeds more empty than full and steep depreciation from high km's + nearing the end of it's Motorplan. See the thing is you simply can't 'cruise' with the beast, it constantly tempts you into heavy foot on the throttle, thus becoming a power crazed junkie!:D

In short, if the re-payments + insurance is already steep - the running cost makes it difficult IF you're me;)

The X5 M no questions asked (if money and running cost are not a problem). Superior in pretty much every single way, including looks, interior quality and engineering power

X5M is very reliable, confortable car and not bad for gaz (I know X6M), oposite tu RR welcome repaires and gaz stations (I know that from my friend hu drives one RR Sport - not diesel). Only advantage of RR great off roader. X5M good roads only.

Hi guys. After much deliberation and coin-flipping I've done the unthinkable and gone non-German for the first time. We take delivery of our new 2012 Range Rover Sport HSE Lux on Friday. It's Fuji white on black. It was such a tough choice but to be honest the Rangie just feels "more me" than the X5M. It seems I've outgrown the boy-racer phase.. Apologies fellow online German car fans ;-)
Fortunately we're staying with Porsche and will be taking delivery of the new Boxster S later this year, so we'll have one SUV for the dogs, comfort & bad roads and one roadster for fun. The roadster will also become a daily driver - hope it's a softer ride than the current Boxster..
Thanks for all your advice and opinions!
    Cheers
    James
