I think the 3-Valve/SOHC engines were indeed done mainly for cost cuttting. These engines came along at the same time MB put the cheapest, most ill-built models on the road like the 1998 ML. That was no mere coiencidence. That said they likely thought such a layout had some technical advances, but if you look back at 5L V8 in the R129 SL anyone can see that Mercedes cheaped out when going to the 3V/SOHC design. Now Ford and Honda still use a SOHC layout on some of their engine now, Ford even uses the same 3-valve design, but I don't see anyone else rushing to copy this. In Ford's case it is likely cost reasons that forced them back considering the dire straights they are now. Honda has used a SOHC layout for years, but not 3-valves. For MB the whole switch from the I6 and a seperate DOHC 32V8 to a shared block/design V6 and V8 all using 3-valves, 2-spark, SOHCs was done for cost reasons. Plain and simple IMO. M
Tikipukapuko (is that a Maori word?), just accepting everything that Mercedes-Benz does without question would make this forum a very boring place indeed. I am not "hating on Benz" -- and I am sure neither was Jeremy Clarkson, afterall, he has owned several Mercs. The loose seat in the CL was perfectly believable, I know someone who continually had problems with the drivers airbag in his CL, it would spontaneously deploy for no reason. The technicians said it was his cellphone that was causing the problem :t-crazy2: ...but it happened even with no cellphone in car.
I never said that they are copying. I said that they run out of ideas. That sketch of the dashboard Wimmer has posted looks so good and original , yet what we got as a result is not as good s it could be.:t-hands:
^running out of ideas.. IE looking for sources of inspiration.. IE Copying..in a way but i can bet that if you look up ANY car ( besides the zonda) the scetch looks better
I'm also very surprised how different the production version of dash looks from the original sketch (which looks extremely fresh & interesting). Such thing is not possible at BMW. There the winning designer takes it all: no collage possible (eg different design parts from different designers). Also the winning proposal gets its production version in the initial look. Only minor differences can occur to resolve some engineering (production) problems . Eg. at BMW design that can not be realized just can't win - since it wouldn't make sense to choose something that in the end came out from production line totally changed.
Lol You forgot to mention Mercedes-Benz is better than Pagani, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti and of course, Ford! ... Fact! To each his own
i said every body have problems!! mercedes benz are not perfect ..... no one is!!! but they are better then other overall.......other companies are good....but they are not better!! sorry to hear about ur friends problem..... but you know that when you hear about other ppl problems your problem becomes almost nothing all of a sudden>>>i know also some ppl that bought cars such as bmw they keep having tranny failures and get stranded in the middle of no where in an unsafe place on freeways....etc.....there cars will die on them in the left lane doing 80+ mph....luckilly they pulled to the rite..... waiting for the tow truck on a saturday night_out!mercedes benz will almost never does that!!! i think when you look at the way jeremy grabed that part of the seat ...im sure it gave a little impression that its bull ****!!!! you said it urself that it would be boring if u accept whatever mercedes benz does becomes boring here!! its only a website for fans ..... we are not mercedes benz engineers..... i know everybody is entiteled to their own opinion....but i think if u dig down a little deeper in your heart you will find that mercedes have a big part of it ......if u are a true enthusiast...!! come on now tell me witch car company in the world that offers the combined luxury and sport say...as s65 or cl 65 that u could drive it as a confortable 4 cylinder with zero nerveousness....and with one push the pedal to the metal and hell is gone loose ...smokes some ferraris lamborghinis...etc... again :bowdown: for mercedes benz!!

This is like an SOS message from a persons who's starving on some random island out in the south pacific. I dont really take what Clarkson says all that seriously, he really likes to trash cars, especially german makes. And no one here is doubting the new MB products, however I feel that Mercedes is always a bit behind the curve (bar the S class). IT seems like they are still play catch up.....

Sure, and nobody would argue with you that Mercedes is not one of the greatest manufacturers ...but lets not forget that Volkswagen engineered the W16 Bugatti Veyron -- an engineering masterpiece.
