I'm thinking to go for a full size SUV. It seems that GL350 and GL450 are almost the same price. Also the same size. But I've never had diesel before and a bit hesitant. Should I concentrate on 450?

Any input or additional info is welcome.

HI i had a GL 320 cdi if you can get a 450 for simalar price and not so worried off fuel consumption then the 450 will be much better in terms off power..

Up until the ad-blue I would have said diesel in a heart beat. If buying used, I'd go with the 450 because you will actually save money. Even though the diesel is cheaper new, it has much higher resale, meaning you can buy the 450 used for less money. Usually a good bit less.

    What exactly is ad-blue?

    Welcome aboard, Gary Cooper!

Ad-Blue is, simply put, a diesel additive that is used to lower certain emissions. Has been used in the heavy truck industry for years.

gary i really think you should go for the 450 if fuel consumption is not a issue..

Thank you. So, does it mean that I have to add some additive, while I'm doing fill-up at the gas station every time?

Ad-Blue is a urea solution that is injected into the exhaust to neutralize NOx emissions. In the US we can thank you leftist, tree hugging, liberals since Al Gorish emissions requirments are so strict. 2009 and newer GLs have the ad blue which is replenished at every 10k service, adding about $80-$100 to your service bill. I think some truck stops are offering the solution, but I'm not sure if you can do it on your own. If it runs out the car is programmed to give you about 20 starts and then it won't start anymore.

I actually went to test drive both. I can say one thing for sure GL450 is much quieter, smoother and for some reason feels more comfortable, even though both have the same interior. The only advantage of BlueTec, as I was told, you can drive around 600 miles before refill. Which is awesome, because I would need to visit gas station only once per month. They also pointed that GL350 maybe more beneficial if I plan to tow, which I don't. Anyway, I'm pretty sure I'll go with V8 GL450. I have about 2 weeks before my lease ends to make my final decision.

If anyone knows of any resource or website, which compares both models, please post some links. Anymore other suggestions will be appreciated...

Today I was told that selection of 2011 GL450's is almost wiped out. They actually suggested to pre-order 2012 GL450, so I can get the options I want. They said they can extend my current lease for a few months, so I can wait and get exactly what I want. Or just wait about 1 and half month until 2012 GLs will be widely available. They are also offering a big discount if I get 2011 out of what's still left. I called MB Financial and they said they can extend my lease for 3 mo if I want to wait for 2012.

    Should I wait for 2012?
    Is it the same?
Or should I pull the trigger on 2011, but without pick and choose?
