    From German Autozeitung

S500 - very good interior quality, good quality in details, good seats, little wind sounds, fastest to 100km/h, highest fuelconsumption, good gearbox however kick-down takes to long time. Good brakes. High price, higher insurance premiums than the competition.

S500 and 750i has better comfort than Audi but the brakes on 750i isnt good.

However, the victory goes to Audi. Offer a very good package for a good price.

    Mercedes S 500 / Audi A8 4.2 quattro / BMW 750i
    0-100 km/h (s) 5.6 6.9 6.1
    60-100 km/h (s) 2.9 3.7 3.2
    80-120 km/h (s) 3.6 4.4 3.9

    Handling (min.) 1:47,8 1:48,0 1:47,9
    Slalom (km/h), 18 m 60.3 62.1 61.5

    Brakedistance from 100 km/h 35.1m 35.3m 36.2m

Next week - new battle coming up

I seriously am so sick and tired of those Audis always wining because they COST less.

    Edit;

Autozeitung has a huge test in the 3er segment too. (3er won)

wow, I thought A8 4.2 was faster than that.. :t-hands:
  4. Just_me Well-Known Member

A8 only has 335hp when the two other has 367hp and 388hp and less torque than the compeition. Audi need to update the engine.

Awesome numbers coming from the Mercedes S500!! :t-roses:
Look like it betters the BMW in handling! with better brakes!
I expected the BMW 750 to have better speed numers than that considering it has 367hp.

I agree, the Audi needs a 5.0liter V8 to stay with the big runners here!
  6. dOmInIX Well-Known Member

yes, it reallyy does need an update...it's becoming old and week compared to the 7er and mighty S!!

Well, both 750i and A8 has higher speed in the slalom than S so wouldnt exaclty say better handling. On a track S500 was 0.01s faster than 750i, probably cause its faster in straightlines and with better brakes. Neither of these cars are any good tracktools. But not much to argue about. S500 did well.
I wonder how higher speed S500 and 750i would have in the slalomcourse with 4Wd :t-hands:

750i did well considering 367 hp and 490nm in acceleration. 60-100 and80-120 the times are closer between the three.

    S 500, 5.5 liters

    388hp and 530Nm

    750i, 4.8 liters

    367hp and 490nm

    A8, 4.2 liters

    334hp and 430nm

BTW, the testers said that A8 had better driving dynamics than the competition. That probably explain why S500 and 750i have better comfort than A8 cause even with the weakest engine, A8 is the faster car in the slalom test and only 0.02 sec slower around the track.

Is AWD even offered on the BMW 7er?
I never saw that on the option list.
  10. Just_me Well-Known Member

No 4Wd isnt an option yet. I was just thinking what difference it would make in the slalomcourse if 750i and S500 was tested with 4wd. Faster or slower speed :t-hands:

Do not forget the weight factor!

    Test data from AutoZeitung's test:

    BMW: 2047kg
    MB: 2059kg
    Audi: 1926kg !!!

That (and brake distance) explains Audi track & slalom times!
MB's powerful engine & 7-speed gearbox explains MB acceleration times.

A big surprise: BMW was the quietest car tested!

i thought so too, perhaps its an error.... its too much of a difference.... why dont they test the S430's in these cases.... seems like more of the right comp.

Haha, in your face all of you who think S-class is so good.

Black on white - the A8 wins!

  14. Tumbo Well-Known Member

It has 6,3 seconds in the papars, and I have seen 6.1 to 6.5 in some tests...but 6.9 ???
  15. Alx Connoisseur

Sounded unusaul... cant be off by so much.

Really? Every report so far has indicated the S-class is extremely quiet? Did they give decibal readings at different speeds or was it a subjective statement? :t-hands:

As expected, the S500's huge price disadvantage cost it dearly.

Well done Audi. (y) Though the performance figures clearly show why the other two are charging more for the bigger engines.
  17. Just_me Well-Known Member

of course it can. It all depends on driver and circumstances. This is no type error. As you guys can see, the A8 is almost as fast as the others from 60-100 and 80-120. Far more important than 0-100km/h.

MB I-drive seems not to be a sure hit. AMS said it was better that the BMW I-drive, but they still had complaints. And it seemed to be the same as on BMW I-drive ( like lack of radio controlls )

Noise [dB]: MB / Audi / BMW

    Outside; when idle: 44 43 43
    Outside; when passing by: 73 73 73
    Inside; at 50 km/h / in 3. gear: 56 57 55
    Inside; at 100 km/h / in highest g.: 63 64 63
    Inside; at 130 km/h / in highest g.: 69 67 67

But there is a remark that 750i produces higher wind noise at higher speed (> 150kmh) than S500.
  20. Alx Connoisseur

Just unusaul, thought it would be the same or within a second at least. 80-120 is surely more important, but still.
