BMW Press Release: Engine of the Year Award 2009: Triple Victory with Four, Six and Eight Cylinders. BMW Group Continues Story of Success in the World’s Most Significant Engine Contest. * 17.06.2009 * Press Release Munich / Stuttgart. Scoring outstanding wins in the three categories of the International Engine of the Year Award, the BMW Group once again highlights its top position this year as a manufacturer of particularly powerful and, at the same time, efficient engines. In the world’s most significant engine contest, the V8 power unit featured in the BMW M3, the straight-six with Twin Turbo Technology to be admired, among other models, in the BMW 3 Series, the BMW 1 Series and the BMW X6, as well as the four-cylinder twin-scroll turbocharged engine in the MINI Cooper S, have all scored triumphant victories in their respective classes. The Awards were presented on 17 June 2009 at the Engine Expo in Stuttgart. This triple victory continues the BMW Group’s story of success in the International Engine of the Year Award. In this contest held since 1999 BMW engines have brought home overall victory no less than six times, including the four last years in a row. This year’s three winners once again thrilled the jury through their fascinating development of power as well as their up-to-date efficiency. This combination of such superior virtues is the result of the BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy characterising both the eight cylinder from BMW M GmbH, the straight-six from BMW, and the MINI four-cylinder. In the engine category between 3.0 and 4.0 litres the V8 power unit featured in the BMW M3 successfully defended the title it had already won last year. Indeed, this 309 kW/420 hp 4.0-litre makes a substantial contribution to the success of BMW’s high-performance sports car in the market, now available in the guise of the BMW M3 Coupé, the BMW M3 Saloon, and the BMW M3 Convertible. The 3.0-litre 225 kW/306 hp six-cylinder with Twin Turbo and High Precision Injection, in turn, this year dominates the engine category between 2.5 and 3.0 litres for the third time in a row. Continuity has also been the name of the game in the engine category between 1.4 and 1.8 litres ever since the year 2007, with the 1.6-litre four-cylinder power unit in the MINI Cooper S with its twin-scroll turbocharger, direct gasoline injection and maximum output of 128 kW/175 hp still setting the standard. The decisions on the International Engine of the Year Award are taken by an international jury made up of renowned motoring journalists. This year the team of no less than 65 experts came from 32 countries, awarding prizes in eight engine classes based on size and in three special categories, as well as the special award for the overall winner. In the eleven contests held so far since 1999, the BMW Group has already brought home more than 40 trophies. This ongoing success in the world’s most significant engine contest is impressive proof of the BMW Group’s unique competence the world over in the area of powertrain development.

So, Mercedes Benz' excellent M156 6.2 litre V8 now gets its due recognition. It begs the question though, why only now? After all of the previous years of barely getting a mention... ~~~ Why do you suppose that Nissan's brilliant VR38DETT didn't even make the best performance engine list? ~~~ How is that BMW's S65 V8 dominates the 3 - 4 litre engine class by double the score of 2nd placed engine and yet only scores exactly the same number of votes in the performance engine category? [I understand how this can happen - I'm just pointing out the curiosity of it.] A somewhat perplexing series of results for IEOTY 2009 I feel.
Mighty impressive result for the M156 AMG V8!! It really impressed the jury!! Beating M's brilliant V10 and V8, and Porsche's out-of-this-world GT3 3.8 flat-six!! BMW really owns the 6-cylinder department. Placed the petrol and diesel L6 at the first and second place, wow! MB's 2.1 cdi had good results too. Mercedes was kinda on fire this year. 3 awards, just like BMW.
Engine of the Year Award 2009: Triple Victory with Four, Six and Eight Cylinders. BMW Group Continues Story of Success in the World’s Most Significant Engine Contest. International Engine of the Year Awards 2009: Mercedes-Benz and AMG build the best engines Stuttgart/Affalterbach Jun 17, 2009 In the coveted "International Engine of the Year Awards 2009", engines from Mercedes-Benz and AMG were voted the best in three categories. The AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine carried off two awards: in the "Best Performance Engine" and "Above 4 litres" categories, this high-revving, naturally aspirated engine developing up to 386 kW/525 hp took first place by a wide margin in each case. In the "2 to 2.5 litres" category, the new four-cylinder diesel unit from Mercedes-Benz also took first place by a comfortable margin. The "International Engine of the Year Awards" are among the most prestigious in the automobile sector, and are presented annually by the British motoring publisher UKIP Media & Events. The best engines of the year are chosen in twelve categories by an independent jury of 64 well-known motoring journalists from 32 countries. This year two engines from Mercedes-Benz and AMG prevailed against stiff competition from Germany, Italy, Great Britain, the USA and Japan. This once again demonstrates the great expertise of Mercedes-Benz and the performance brand AMG in the development and production of exciting engines. For 2009 the winner in the "Best Performance Engine" and "Above 4 litres" categories was the AMG6.3-litre V8 engine. This high-revving, naturally aspirated power unit with a displacement of 6208 cc develops an output between 336 kW/457 hp and 386 kW/525 hp, a maximum torque of 630 newton metres, and is used in seven AMG high-performance cars such as the C 63 AMG and the SL 63 AMG. The basis for its agile power delivery is a concerted technology transfer from motor racing, something that has been firmly embedded in the corporate philosophy of Mercedes-AMGfor more than four decades. Jury member Bill McKinnon (USA): "Enormous pulling power and the responsiveness of a racing engine, combined with a "Wagneresque" soundtrack - this AMGV8 sets the standard." A high performance with exemplary fuel economy is also offered by the newly designed direct-injection four-cylinder diesel engine from Mercedes-Benz. The most powerful variant develops 150 kW/204 hp from a displacement of 2143 cc, with a maximum torque of 500 newton metres. It is used in both the new E-Class and the C-Class. The C 250 CDIBlueEFFICIENCY Saloon equipped with this engine has a combined fuel consumption of just 5.1 litres per 100 kilometres - showing exemplary efficiency. The 125 kW/170 hp variant is happy with 4.8 litres of diesel fuel per 100 km (corresponding to CO2 emissions of 127 g/km) - the best figure in this category. Jury member John Carey (Australia) describes the engine as follows: "Effortless performance and an unbelievably low fuel consumption." According to Friedrich Eichler, Head of Engine and Powertrain Development at Mercedes-AMG: "These top rankings reflect the huge enthusiasm of our customers for the AMG6.3-litre V8 engine and the high-performance cars equipped with it - and they confirm the extremely positive test results in all the worldwide media." Christoph Schmidt-Arnold, Head Project Manager for the new diesel engines, echoes these comments: "We are extremely pleased that the new four-cylinder diesel engine from Mercedes-Benz has been so well received by our customers and that its combination of high efficiency and maximum driving pleasure has now been acknowledged with this award." Congratulations to the Mercedes engineers developing these engines! I also note the small smart diesel was a runner up... 2. Smart Diesel 799cc (Smart Fortwo) 216
Concerning the M156, it may be because of the recent MCT gearbox, allowing a much greater responsiveness of the engine compared to the standard 7G-tronic. That makes it more rev-happy, give it an more instantaneous response, feels more connected tot he engine. I expect very great things from the SLS, and its dual-clutch transaxle gearbox coupled to a completely revamped V8...
The M156 is only used in conjunction with the MCT transmission in the SL. For all the others it's combined with a conventional auto. So that's hardly a determining factor. The result is simply odd and hard to explain given the engine's historical performance in the competition.
Yeah, i know, but the SL may reveal to the experts the true potential of the engine, what lead to this result? :t-hands:
It really could. Imagine if the V8 in the last Audi S4 had only been used with the auto box. Well, maybe a sad example but the automatic transmission in the B6 S4 pretty much killed that engine. Other than that I can only think that they remembered that they had not given the 6.2 the credit it deserved in previous years competition and decided it was time to recognize it. I mean, many if the engine it beats this time have beaten it before, right? The 35i did even beat it in 2007.
