With the BMW X1 proving to be a resounding sales success, it's no surprise the company is reportedly considering an X1 M. While nothing is official, the car would likely feature an aggressive body kit, a sport-tuned suspension, and a high performance braking system. Power would reportedly be provided by a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that develops 315 hp (235 kW / 320 PS) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque. It would be paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission which would enable the X1 M to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in approximately five seconds. Does anyone else think BMW maybe should have introduced another sport's division for it's performance X's. Leave the M for their top performance cars, 1, 3, 5, 6 and have another for the X5, X6, X1.
The BMW M8, E46 M3 Touring and M6 CSL are all examples of M cars that were "under consideration". Under consideration is non-committal.
The stats read like an April Fool joke anyway ~ a late one at that. Why bother? On the other had a X1 "si" model would be nice. Give it a manual and its relative lightweight compared to the X M models would make it a favorite of the group IMO. M
Every BMW is looked at for M Application. Market demands have changed the initial outlook for what can be classified as an M enough to warrant an outcry by enthusiasts but deemed profitable for the company. This year hearld's the two year anniversary of the X1 since it hit the market so with sales past 100,000 units it will be looked at and considered. The new boss though wants M3 and M5 Tourings which is why the E91 was not shown to the media. In one form or another either a standard car with additional body parts formed out of plastic or a full prototype or design clay model, each car goes through an evaluation for M.
Well, if they developed the 1M so as to make M more accessible, then it would make sense to do the same for the X1, especially considering its sales success, and the overall popularity of 4WDs. If the X1M gets green-lighted, then definitely the X3 will join the M line-up shortly thereafter. For an X1M, I imagine it would share many things from the current 1M or next gen' 1M/M2, so cost-wise it makes sense. I think the whole 'iS' thing just doesn't add enough branding value or specialty to a model, and now that M has put the old dogma's of the M-brand to rest, it makes more financial and branding sense to simply name it the X1M. You could probably say that all the M models which have the 'M' placed after their donor model name (eg: X5M, X6M, X1M) are a sub-group/brand within the M family, and that those which have the proper Mx nomenclature (eg: M3, M5, M6, ...M2?) are the true M vehicles. Maybe that'll help those who's reason for living has now been put in jeopardy since M broke-free of their dogmas.
M7.... No-go because of whatever agreement BMW have with Alpina (kick-back for Alpina is preservation of sales of the B7) Z4M... Dunno what the hell is their problem in not developing this except that it just won't sell in justifiable numbers (and apparently that the S65 motor from the M3 won't feasibly fit into the Z4's engine bay). BUT... if what Scott is saying is true about the new boss wanting an M3 and M5 Touring (which are low volume sellers themselves), then a future Z4M sharing stuff from the next M3 or 1M/M2 should be on the drawing boards.
Of all the "under considerations", why isn't the Z4 M a consideration? it is probably "the model" that "needs" an M application and it doesn't. X1 M is OK imo, it is the sportiest SAV after the X6 arguably, reasonably low too. much better than the idea of a X3M or X5M. talking about the 1series, shouldn't there be a M-1series hatch in the new generation? i always find it werid why a 1Mhatch was never considered given its identity as the most agile BMW out there, and there is competition RS3.
The Z4 GT3 isn't exactly road-legal, and therefore it's engine bay isn't constricted like that of the road-going Z4.
A 350HP RWD SAV Ok it sounds funny but I might even want one. Imagine that thing drifting... And if they only produce it with AWD as the only option... bad BMW PS: Yes, I know it's not going to be RWD.
