BMW Targets 25,000 X3 Sales in US in 2011

BMW is planning a big sales push for the redesigned 2012 BMW X3. If all things go right with our crazy, mixed-up economy, the automaker is hoping to move 25,000 X3s in the United States during the 2011 calendar year, Tom Kowaleski, director of communications for BMW USA, told Inside Line. The redesigned crossover hits U.S. dealers late this year.

That's a huge jump from the current pace (3,439 X3s were sold in the first half of 2010), but not such a leap from past years -- BMW sold us 17,622 X3s in 2008. And the company is on pace to sell well over 30,000 units of the larger X5 in the U.S. in 2010.

BMW figures the increased size of the second-generation X3 will be a significant draw for U.S. buyers. Yeah, yeah, bigger isn't always the way to go anymore, but the interior volume of the 2012 X3 is evidently right on par with the first-gen X5, and you know how much we all liked that vehicle.

Likely you've heard that BMW will use the X3 to launch its build-to-order program in the U.S. Mind you, you can already special-order just about any vehicle you want, but most Americans don't; they just buy something out of dealer inventory. Since the X3 will be built in Spartanburg, South Carolina, BMW can promise a 1-week turnaround on orders.

As further encouragement, Kowaleski says BMW will exclusive options for built-to-order X3s -- special paint and trim options that you won't be able to get if you buy one off a dealer lot.

One particularly nice (read: lucrative) side effect that BMW anticipates from the build-to-order program is that consumers will spend more liberally on options in order to get their X3 just so.

Offering incentives may help increase the sale as well as intensive promotion. Hope it would be successful.
Well I have heard BMW AG, the premium car makers, reported moving over 21,000 automobiles in the U.S. in July. However, the Wall Streets Journal says it may have sweetened those figures by counting unsold demo models. One thing I'm not sure of. Hence, it's possible that BMW sales surge may have been inflated.

    The X3...nah, not worth it.
    I'll take a RWD X1 :)
I really, really want to drive a BMW RWD truck and am waiting for them to do one.
It's actually one of my weird dreams :)

How do the worldwide X3 vs. X5 sales compare? I have a feeling that its close. X5 sales most in US. X3 sells more in Europe.

    2011 worldwide sales:
    X1: 126,429
    X3: 117,944 (US: 27,793)
    X5: 104,827 (US: 40,547)

    2012 Jan-Jun worldwide sales:
    X1: 64,387
    X3: 74,098
    X5: 52,399

Yet mind X1 LCI is just about to be launched in US & China as well (where it will be locally produced, and thus a very attractive model)!

The X3 sDrive 18d is € 8,000 cheaper than the next diesel in the line-up in my country, the 2.0d with AWD.
    It's going to do well.
