    My brain is fried just trying to work this one out :bonk: so I will wait to see how Porsche has figured it out as they are better at working out engineering problems than me or I will ever be. Flicking one paddle for up and another for down is a better solution when you move beyond 6 gears, or better still just sticking it in Drive, slow down a little and take in the tunes on the radio. :2cool:

    I think 7 speed gear box is not that practical for every day use car, in my case I'm olready not using 3-d gear to often and almost never 5-th, mostly related to speed limits. So 7 speed transmision is propably for Gernan's Autobahns or speed track not for every day driving.

    I guess thay are stupid enough to produce them because thay still sell quit well. (The excutive title belongs to the 7er btw.)




    Thanks for posting that. It really does make a lot of since and in my book
    would be the turning point of the M5 as a luxury car which makes it a little less special than previous (or any other generation) M5.

    This is going to be one fat cat! I`m going to predict an overall weight figure of around 4400+lbs.
    If a manual transmission won`t be offered thay might as well slap xDrive
    as an option for those of us who have to live with the snow.

    Well, I'd beg to differ. Regardless of the car, if you are driving to and from work, taking the kids to school, or whatever you are doing that does not require you to speed too much, wouldn't the car, in a comfort mode setting and not sport setting, shift to higher gears? In other words, it would use 4, 5th and maybe even 6th, depending on where you live. I agree with you, the 7 speed gear box is mostly advantages for highways like the german autobahn, but I'd think it would also be beneficial in cities.

    Most of the 5 series I see on the road are fitted with a slushbox.

    However, there are idiots out there who buy a 5-series, A6 and even an E-class fitted with a manual gearbox.

    Bad move... Because when it comes the time to sell the car, they realise that aren't enough idiots in the world willing to buy a large car with a manual gearbox, which explains why you always see one of these lemons for sale for a ridiculously low price.

    In the UK at least, the 5-series have always been marketed as the executive model and the 7-series as the luxury model.

    Not going to discredit you for that statement, good point. Thats one of the basics one should consider when buying a manual gearbox. Location also plays a factor as well.

    I`ve never posted in the BMW section so much. I`m a Mercedes fan at heart but I can`t help to be very curious as to how this new M5 turns out. As usual I can always depend on Martinbo, Klier and Just-me, (the 3 gold medal winners, with a few others) for all the latest developements and news on the F10 M5. Good going guys.

    Thanks all the same GTA, but honestly I know close to nothing about the F10 M5. :D

    I think it will have about 425 kW (570 hp) and push out about 700-750 Nm from its M-fettled, twin-turbo, reverse-flow V8 engine which is expected to feature the same cross-flowed twin-scroll turbo system coupled with bigger charge air coolers, bigger, higher-flow inlet systems and an acoustically optimised exhaust system to make the anodyne V8 sound more the business and less the corner café.

    I expect that the F10 M5 will feature a dual-clutch M-DCT gearbox over an 8-speed (dash of)slush 'box. I think this because:
    a) BMW showed a final, once-off, E60 M5 (didn't they even call it a CSL?) with a DCT box. Why would they do so and then waffy out with an old school auto.
    b) Mercedes Benz' MCT makes for better on paper reading (i.e. Internet fanboi ammo).
    c) Porsche's Panamera - a key competitor - comes out with a DCT transmission.
    Whether it will make the same farting noise that dual-clutch VAG products do when changing up a gear - I can't say.

    All that I can say is that it won't have a 7 speed manual gearbox. :)

    Does anyone have the information as to the percentage of E60 M5 sold in manual form, it could be interesting reading to see just how little there were. Might find that all the ones rooting for it's return on here are the only ones which bought it, all twelve of them. :D

    @Martinbo, I do get you, the one-off M5CSL had a DCT box from the M3 so why not the F10 M5 but did it have anything like the 700-750Nm that we are expecting this M5 to have, somehow I think that will be a bigger deciding factor to whether it gets the DCT than it having a similar output figure don't you think. :eusa_thin

    Also the MCT, it's an automatic with the torque convertor removed, right. Then what is the real benefit in performance terms over the ZF 8 speed. Does it allow for a quicker shift or does it sap less power or it just provide a more mechanical feel when you shift? :t-hands:

    -4,4 liter V8 biturbo

    -720 Nm

    -7-gear automatic gearbox

    -perfect roadholding and feedback

    -V8-growl that with some turbos whistling that then grows to Ferrari V8 sound (and this is from inside only)

    7-speed automatic? I think he meant the 7-speed DCT.

    7 Speed Auto? Can't be.
    It's either a 7 speed DCT box or an 8 speed auto. ZF doesn't even make a 7 speed auto to my knowledge and they're BMW's OEM supplier of automatic transmissions.

    I remember reading a while back about the KERS being implemented into the M5. I guess they threw that idea out??

    This information is from a German forum. Some guy had the opportunity to have a short ride in an F10 M5. Turns out that the BMW test driver only said '7-speed' without actually mentioning what type of transmission is used. So the guy asked again and says it's apparently a DCT that was used in this testcar.

    Just so this rumor is reflected correctly. :)

    Exactly. It it was a 7 speed, it was a DCT box. And besides, since when is DCT not automatic?????

    if i remember correctly, they said something that kers will come eventually in m5, but not from release

    So which new M is coming on m-power.com? M5?

    Saw this on m-power.com
