Not sure if its been posted in this thread, but I'll throw it in here..even if it just stirs up some conversation in this thread. :)

That looks a hell of a lot sportier than the 5er GT. I think utilizing extra-flared wheel arches on this vehicle (like you would get on an M model for example) would really help give it that sporty edge (even if its supposed to be a luxo-lounge).

So BMW are still pursuing this despite the 5GT's flop response?

I tink this will be the direct answer to Citroën 's DS5, very odd cars.

What is the wing for? That fat ass is not going anywhere.

Nothing to be excited about :eusa_doh:

Those bloated things need the rear wing to cover their aerodynamical shortcomings resulting from the body shape.

Just like eg. Audi A7, Audi TT, Porsche Panamera, etc?

C'mon. If a rear wing is not incorporated in the boot lid / hatch door - which usually makes rear higher - then retractable or pop-up wing is a more appropriate solution. Especially from the design point of view ... yet it cost a bit more, and requires some extra engineering.

Retractable rear wing allows you to keep the rear on these large fastbacks relatively short & low. Since aerodynamics requires either higher rear or longer end to make the air flow more optimal. The other alternative are high rear ends like seen on eg. X6 or 5er GT.

Also the active aerodynamic parts were announced few years ago for BMW cars ... retractable wing's just being one of them.

Btw, 3er GT doesn't look bloated IRL. Mind the prototype is still full of masking plastic claddings underneath the camo tape.

Sure it's higher than eg A5 but it's definitely does not look oversized as eg 5er GT & X6 perhaps are. The 3er GT design flows much smoother, proportions are nice. And I'm sure also due to retractable wing - which I'm sure was designers idea, which the engineers had to follow (since project manager greenlighted it - although being a bit more expensive). I guess 5er GT doesn't have it due to already complex twin-door hatch / boot design. And in the end the larger GT is more of a cruiser than 3er GT is.

Exactly! Remember the dilemma Audi encountered with the first-gen TT and high-speed accidents on german highways? They had to retrofit a rear wing on the cars and subsequently made ESP standard instead of the pay-for-it option it used to be.

Fact is: If the 3er GT wouldn't need a wing, it wouldn't get one. Just ask the bean counters...

Maybe the format could make it more successfull than the 5 GT?

    Brilliant.

Reminds me of the A5 :)

5er GT is selling quite well in markets where it was intended to (Europe), and to the targeted customer pool.

What keeps the sales from being even higher is the lack of 4cyl-engined 5er GT models, especially the diesel ones, and mainly the 520d.

But I guess BMW is keeping the 4cyl engines for 3er GT ... While 5er GT will stay more on 7er level regarding the engine choice.

With the X1 around I don't think so. The Police Dog unit in the UK might find it useful though.

Like I said from the beginning. The 5 GT should have been introduced as the 520d GT from the start. That would have been the most relevant version of that model.

young man, if you ever compare such with the A5 ever again, I shall be dishing out infractions to you :D

It's the opposite I'm afraid; that fat ass will be going everywhere without that wing, above certain speeds at least. Lets blame the odd shape for the inclusion of a wing, not some wannabe sporty image..

    Bingo!
Like I said, they aren't putting on the wing to make the car look sporty. They put it on because it will be dangerous without one on a German Autobahn without speed limit. The car might take off or something without wing.

ah , When you think of it. The new 3er has rewritten the rules for the segment. 3er GT will bring a new level of luxury similar to the 5er GT in the 3er segment, which no one has any complaints from the inside of the 5er GT.
Aswell as the rewritten rules for dynamics and handling plus customers will be able to get the 3er GT with four cylinder petrol and diesel engines.

we'll see, but in the mean time, the 5GT is still an ugly looking BMW that should have never come to market. Pretty sure that even BMW knows that now. It sold well in the US cause the dealerships are giving them away
