I also expected the Audi to win. The Porsche Turbo is the fourth Porsche in the 911 range that I would pick, beaten by the 911 GT3, 911 GT3 RS and 911 GT2. No, wait. I would take the 911 Carrera S before it too.
In terms of performance the difference between the V8 and V10 has proven to be marginal. From the tests released so far, the V10 has failed to replicate the immense success of the V8 version. Sometime more power doesn't make the car better, 420 is a sweet spot for the R8 in terms of performance and balance. The facelifted 997TT is due in the next 2 month, will have 500hp, PDK and will completely humiliate the R8 V10. Like I have said all along, the V10 version isn't all that, and that it's better to stack up some more chips and buy an LP560. Audi has lost this one.
Yes, but the V10 does not add anything to the product and the R8 V8 was such a novelty it sure got a few extra points just for that.
More than the V10, I think the stupid R tronic transmission is to blame for the not so stellar performance - Audi should just retire it and do just the manual till it can get a DCT to handle the torque. The other thing that I think looks stupid with the V10 version is the led headlights, they look like old school halogens, I'd much rtaher have the xenos in the V8 version.
I apologise if people get offended by this, but IMO, you'd have to be a complete muppet to choose any (however competent they are dynamically) 911 over the R8 V8 or V10.
In my opinion, the problem with the R8 is that the engine was not designed for this car, it was borrowed. BMW M cars are so good to drive cos they're not just tuned cars, but rather purpose built machines. Love the R8 interior. Is it me or does the Porche look a bit cheesy. It could just be the colour that doesn't sit well with me.
Then there are lot of muppets who go tracking and would choose a GT2/GT3 over an R8 at a blink of an eye. But then again with that signature, you wonder who is the real muppet. Oh, yea, no offense.
different tastes. But why a complete muppet? The R8 is a GT designed by Audi to try and enter that market. The 911 is the car that has won the most races in automotive history when all categories are combined, and you can feel that heritage at every gear change. Some people like that. Muppets? I don't think so. Mike
There is no way I would choose an R8 over a 911. And yes, I already saw many R8s (white, black, black on black with black wheels, blue...). Looks loke a stretched TT, totally awkward and disproportionate from the side (and the tacky alu/carbon insert used to hide that is not the most refined and elegant design element it gives). I hate the look of that car. The 911 is every bit as gorgeous as for forty years on the other hand. And a 911 never gets outdated (bar the 996 imo) by a newer model. The V8-noise is also not really as thrilling as the Flat-6 scream (except the Turbo who makes a disappointing noise I admit). The R8 is a very competent car, it will be very well forgotten in ten years, will look totally outfashioned next to the newer Audi models. The 911 will still be there in ten years, as mythical as ever, unlike the myriad of competitors it already saw dying.
Probably the first time ever, loving a Porsche I'd take the R8... it's just freaking awesome! :t-cheers: Btw, I think this thread lacks a poll. Why? For some surprising results & cocky talk on results!
@Sunny: Dude, grow up. @All: Just to reiterate, we need to re-read my original post, but this time, try to also read the 'IMO' and 'however competent they are dynamically' bits as well. My particular viewpoint stems from taking track ability out of the equation completely. Even if we were considering track ability, it's not like we're comparing the 911 to an SL63 AMG here; the R8 is a great handling car in its own right. In any event, I personally think, IN MY OPINION, the R8 offers more thrills, is newer and the sound of the V8 version in particular, (V10 is too typical e.g. M5/Gallardo) is outstanding. Audi has made a landmark car and I don't think it will be forgotten all too easily. If only a DSG option was available:eusa_pray Perhaps a decade ago or even 5 years ago, the 911's track prowess put it leagues above everyone else, however, with cars like the GTR, Z06 (not a fan of either) and to some extent, even the R8, have diminished that lead greatly. You are all free to add "Only muppets like R8's as well." Gentlemen, if that is indeed the case, then I must be an utter muppet.
tss tss, and this on a car enthusiast forum No it didn't. The 911 in its 964 shape was beaten on the track in 1991 by a Mazda RX7. There may be other examples. there are often excellent cars that beat 911s on the track. It's not the track prowess of the 911, it's the fact that it is at home on a racetrack (a GT3 with its dry sump engine, tunable suspension, etc etc is made to spend days on the ring), the engine layout and position or for softer 911s (the regular carreras etc) they are cars with the feel, flair, handling and performance of a racecar, with an enormous heritage. That's why many people will tell you they prefer 911s. Not because it will, say, beat the R8 on the Nurburgring. The R8 is a GT car designed with Audi TT roots. It's an Audi, has A4 knobs etc. The sound of the engine is I am sure great, and the engine itself is definitely great, and it is an excellent excellent GT car in its own right, and each to his own and the 911 is great too. Many cars are special, but the R8 is just too TT like to be up there yet, my opinion. Mike
R8 V10 without a doubt. I don't give a damn how GOOD the porsche is, it's not even comparable to the R8 in looks and interior desin.
