I don't think you were particularly aggressive to be honest.

Accepted. I know being a mod is a thankless task. Believe it or not, I'm a mod on another car forum but I never actually have to do anything because most of the people police themselves.

I'll admit my own flaw is not knowing when to let something go over the top of my head. This is just the internet after all and arguing with random people on a forum is just wasted energy.

Betty, why are you on GCF is you dislike the people in here so much? And then, who do you believe you are to say who talks sense and who doesn't?

Why just the first 7? Why not the firts page, for example :) Anyway buddy, is ok; we have different points of view, that's all.

    Regards!

Because there are a few members who make very intelligent and well-informed posts free from bias or any kind of agenda.

Anybody on here is free to form an opinion on somebody based on what they post. There are some people who have a reputation for making high-quality and insightful posts free from any emotion, and based on experiences they've had or from sound reasoning. My mistake is engaging with the people whose posts don't deserve my attention. I should just ignore them.

    Ha!

I'll however, put in practice your last two sentence's advice. Oops, I just missed.

Wouldn't say nobody really cares. When the Evoque lost to the Merc C-Class coupe, I pointed that out: The Merc was better in most of the major areas (speed, handling, composure, economy) and comparable in others (ride quality and price). Yet the Evoque was rated higher overall mainly on style. If you're going to put so much emphasis on curbside appeal, don't bother to pass it off as a "comparison" when the other vehicle is clearly better under the actual test criteria.

And the test criteria is an important distinction: With Evo, we know where they're coming from, what they expect in cars. In some of those eCOTY tests, they spell them out explicitly as part of the preface. As such, Porsche RSs fit their bill perfectly.
With AutoExpress, it's not so clear. Could not bias be a consideration when in their interior evaluation, they praise the Jaguar's "charming" mix of leather and wood...when the pictures they publish indicate there isn't any wood whatsoever in that Jag at all?

When British bias is mentioned, it doesn't mean that it has to manifest itself in all mags (via final rankings) across all British media. Merely that British cars are perhaps sometimes given a helping hand they wouldn't otherwise receive in tests conducted in other areas. Not a strange concept; Italian mags tend to prefer Italian cars; American mags, American cars (via objective points scoring).

Even me would take that M5 over the Jag.

I saw one the other day in Doha. Took me a while to understand whether it was a 7 series or a 5 series or even an M5...
So yeah, it doesnt look to IN YOUR FACE. Its more of a sleeper now.

    Btw, I want a test of S8 vs M5!!!

Second that. There are a few people that makes this forum really interesting. And then there are these, who I cant stand even read one word of their posts...

Long argument short..do you really think that Jaguar can build a super saloon better than the Germans?
  9. Betty Swollocks Well-Known Member

I prefer to make a decision on what is the better car based on driving both examples rather than trying to decide one is better than the other because it happens to be "German".

Until I have the opportunity to drive both the XFR and the M5, I'll not dismiss a professional car journalist's opinion, someone who has actually driven both cars, because it doesn't fit my own agenda and they happen to be writing for a British magazine.

Probably will never happen and if it did the M5 will probably walk all over it. Different cars that are design for an entirely different customer.

That said I'm not entirely sure which I would prefer to own, in the past that big Audi had something about it few others could offer, don't know yet whether this one is the same.

The S8 should be compared to the Alpina B7 IMO.
  12. donkeykong Well-Known Member

^I agree,I saw my first Alpina b7 just recently it's hot too.
  13. Tarek Well-Known Member

Well taking the value for your money points out of the equation,The Jag might ONLY win in british tests.

British mags in general have a reputation of favoritism their native cars, and that's a fact.

First of all, a good thread cleaning is due.

Now, as far as the discussion continuation is concerned: Discussing this test is ok. Having the opinion that a certain magazine is biased is respectable only if it can be backed up by solid arguments and not just random links.

Anything else, like stereotypes and bold comments without any backing are neither constructive nor welcome.

I hope this thread continues with quality posts and not yet another fight!

PS. That is a general warning, not aimed at any member specifically.

I've driven the XFR, and while a very good car, it just doesn't feel like the German cars. The electronics feel old, and it just doesn't have that feeling of solidty or that deep rooted engineering that German cars have. No way its a better car than the M5 IMO.

I don't understand that AutoExpress Comparison. They say the M5 is good for 364 days a year and the XF-R is good for that one day a year you really want to go crazy. I'm not buying a luxury sports sedan to go crazy in. I want it to perform well in the back roads and maybe the track if it tickles my fancy. I actually thought that review was retarded.

Quality is up there on the XF-R. I like how it felt. The refresh makes it look even sexier.

Yes, it`s a good car. In some cases it`s doing better than the 5-Series.
  20. Just_me Well-Known Member

Sure, XFR beat both A6, E-class and 5-series in some cases but as allrounder or as a complete package there are better choices. What I really like about XFR is the exterior, looks better than the germans. Only thing I dont like is the interior.

Another car I like is the new XJ. The car looks like a mess on pictures but in real life it looks a lot better than A8, S-class and 7-series. Its actually a very good looking car in metal.
