    Absolute POWER!

    Performance through Greater Efficiency...

BMW's first foray into mid-size Coupe-Sedan territory means business as it lays it's armoury at the competition.

following on from an LCi of the BMW X6 in March 2012 @ Geneva. The new BMW 6er Gran Coupe will receive the all new and much discussed Tri-Turbo diesel which will be found in the BMW X6xDrive50d with 354PS.
With the Gran Coupe debuting immediately after in 2012 - Two years on from it's concept The engine will be offered in the BMW 6er GranCoupe 50d and 50d-M-Sport. Both with optional xDrive.
And the BMW 750d. It will then ,throughout 2012 emerge in the 6er Coupe , 5er Sedan/Touring and Gran Turismo and of course the X5.

To extend the M6 Gran Coupe further from the M5 which was always BMW's High performance four door. The new BMW M6 Gran Coupe will spearhead more power taking the power of the engine to 580BHP through the 7 Speed M-DCT.
Originally intended but dialed back for the M5 due to the conception of the Gran Coupe , Gran Coupe will be the flagship M model. BMW M6 Gran Coupe will also bring some performance related technology such as Carbon Ceramic brake discs and exclusive wheel options.

M6 Gran Coupe will also identify a unique approach to performance inspired luxury in conjunction with the BMW Individual department. Including exclusive Carbon Trim, and Uniquely trimmed individual sports seats with two tone trim. To enhance the new 4dr Coupe's sporting 4 passenger interior that continues the overall sportiness of the 6er interior but extends the design further onto the rear doors and through the rear passenger compartment.

    Another reason I'm glad I didn't go for the M5. :)

lol, poor M5. It's going to be 1-upped by another 4 door M sedan after all these years....

BTW, I hope the M6 coupe and cabrio will have more power too.

While in Germany, our sources told us that the M6 Gran Coupe is the best looking M to date. The car is still in the clay modelling stage.

They have two prototypes that are regular models but with M6 Drivetrain and have recently been completed but not "publically" tested. I would say Spy Photographers miss what happens when darkness falls. (lazy? or home watching Glee?:D) Anything new is taken under the cover of darkness and moved to the testing facility.

Disappointed. Not cause M5 has 560HP or 580HP, but if you are going to put an engine in a car, rate it for what it is worth and not play stupid marketing games. Unlike AMG, M didn't do that crap till now. If you want to make M6 better to justify higher price, make it faster in a substantial way like make it lighter or give it an engine with substantial improvements, not same engine with different marketing number.

The tri turbo diesel is exciting (though we been hearing bout it for quite some time now), hopefully it makes it to State side.

    M50d anyone?

M5 dialled back. Don't like the sound of that. Agree with Betty. Was the 1M dialled back for a CSL too?

Not possible. Probably further along than you think it is...

Sunny, BMW has been doing this for like forever too. Think 420 hp M3 vs 500 hp E60 M5.

6er Gran Coupe is huge. It can use any power available. :)

How much bigger will 6er GC be compared to 5er? Can't be that much otherwise it would be bigger than the 7er....which it won't be.

Don't follow, that's two completely different power trains? In this scenario both engines are the same and probably dyno within next to nothing from each other, but are given different numbers in the litterature. Very remniscient of the numbers game VAG's been playing with the 2.0TSI ever since the 185 Seat and the 200 hp Golf, which turned out to have the exact same numbers...

Actually whilst the car is in styling but the engineering package is complete they just transfer everything to the production car and test it every way possible.
An M car means engine development and chassis work are given the highest priority that the styling becomes an afterthought. If you look at early F10's or even E60's the first prototypes were regular 5er's. Even the M3 was a regular 3er Coupe and the 1M was a cannibalized 135i.
Styling comes much further in the development process.

The M6 Gran Coupe is going to bring a distinct look to it , but we are also working on a wholly Individual 6er Gran Coupe in the BMW Individual studio.
Some really exciting experiments in color and trim, We are also looking at a sportier Individual wheel with five spoke design and working on more Individual paint finishes such as "Ozone Silver". Now that the Gran Coupe will be a flagship for BMW it will be in a segment where for the customer price will not be an obstacle and since BMW Individual is a highly profitable division for BMW.
The potential to what can be offered with the car to gather more exclusivity is very much in development.

6er Gran Coupe is longer than the 5er and a few inches shorter than the BMW 7er. However between the 3er both E90 and F30, 5er and 7er. In height , the 6er Gran Coupe is lower than all three , even the E92 coupe.

You are of course correct with regards the E92 M3. 420hp is quite a bit less than they could have given it. So this is not exactly new territory for the M Divison. However, "been doing this for like forever"? Is eight years "forever"? The E46 CSL and the standard M3 are examples of what M used to do. Taking an engine and extracting the highest amount of performance possible. That's why I fell in love with M, and the F10 M5 is the reason I fell out of love with M.

Exactly, that was my point. E60 M5 and E92 M3 has 2 different engines. It is not like they shoved the V10 in the M3 but rated it in M3 at 420HP. AMG does this a whole lot, shove the M156 (now M157) in every thing from C class to S and and just give it a different rating. To me it smacks of engineering disingenuity.

    350d OH Yes!

6er GC is over 5m in length, so it's at least 10cm more which is a lot (weight?).

And in my scenario, the M3 V8 is downrated and not the uber NA V8 like the previous I6 in the M3 was. The V8 is dumbed down because it would make the M5 obsolete, nor does it break any records like the I6 did in it's day. It pretty much boils down to the same thing in my book.

Besides, a 523i and 528i is the same engine with different tuning, so this really is nothing new or anything like that. I don't see the problem besides the fact that BMW nowadays is too lazy to build a bespoke engine...

Next step in the AMG route M is following: 6K option: power upgrade/performance package for the M5 to 580 PS.

I'm pretty sure we got the right scoop. Meaning no M6 GC fully built, the drivetrain tested in regular 6er GC.

But hey, just passing on the message...
