These guys are gonna whore out the stupid f@ck!ng dropping line like they have the Star grille. This model should be supremely interesting to see how it turns out. The current one is nice, but probably left the least impression of any S-Class based 2-Door Coupe in Mercedes' history. It'll probably simply come and go (undoubtedly an effect of Mercedes' inflating its product line namely with smaller models that take so many design cues from it). I hope M-B puts some attention into this one and makes something bespoke in a sense, instead of more or less giving up on the big Mercedes 2-Door by way of making it relatively homogenized. Edit: That render actually looks really good, it needs a more elegant and grand front than what appears to be the boxier CLS front pasted on, which is in contrast with what seems to be a more smoothed and organic design of the next CL, however.
I wondered if starting a thread on this would be feasible without spy shots, but it's good to see some renders of the coupe. Interestingly, in 2002 a soft-top cabriolet version of the C215 was patented. I also remember seeing a patent for a C216 cabriolet, but can't find the pic.
The current cl is a piece of shit in terms of looks,a nd also sold like crap, about 1/3 compared to the previous generation. car only looked good in sportpack amg trim, unacceptable for a car of that price..
Lol. I dunno why but that made me laugh. I like the direct tone. Yeah, when the C215 launched (or whatever the code for the 2000 model is), it was all the rage. So much hoopla, such a commanding presence it had in terms of appeal to everyone. I personally wasn't even crazy about that car, and preferred the W220, but couldn't deny how much impact it had.... also, it's still INCREDIBLY timeless and looks amazing when clean and equipped right. The new CL.... Something about it was just "warm".... the W221 was far and away the popularity contest winner between the two this time around. I do think the current CL is nice.... even gorgeous sometimes.... but the core design is just.... too.... "blah" for what we expect from the almighty "CL"?
the current CL is just 2 plain, especially the rear area, and looks plain down horrible in standard form, unacceptable for S class prices, and i cant believe justify the car by saying put an amg sportpack....., it shouldnt need the AMG treatment to look good.
Yes Mercedes has been toying with the idea of a CL Cabrio since the C140, but always feared it would hurt the SL. I don't know how you guys can talk about the current CL like that. The C215 was gorgeous too, but cheaply made...it wasn't nearly as well built as the C216 is. The current CL is gorgeous. And probably the best all arounder Mercedes makes. M
I technically really is.... there's just "something" about it that never truly enticed me, though I think it'll go in the M-B catalog as one of their classic designs. It does look REALLY lacking and awkward, even odd in total standard trim I thing, though. Needs the AMG Package.
Completely agree with Marcus, the current CL (as was the previous) is absolutely wonderful. It looks so refined, understated. If I had to choose just one car for the rest of my life, it will be the CL. I love it!
In the first place I'm sure the reason they even canceled plans from the above patent images was because the C215 was already long in the tooth developmentally. The design of the C216 had just been frozen in 2002, so that was dropped and then for some reason plans for a C216 cabrio were introduced, then dropped again. This time they are at least following through with it. Unfortunately it took 30+ years to do it. When I had first seen the C216 upon it's debut, it looked ugly to me in its early press photos as did the W221 the year before. I recommend that MB never uses these wheels again for a debut. The hubcaps on those 19-spoke wheels are so unappealing that it took the AMG package for me to erase that first impression of it. It makes the car look very bland.
To me the C216 has never really looked distinctly German. The W221 does, but not the CL. I really don't know why I feel that way, but I really do think that the facelift helped to erase that feeling.
This pic is a reminder as to why I sometimes find the car proportionally "off". For a Coupe, too much length behind the front doors, I'd like to see slightly more cab-backwards look, also, the hood could be a smidge more proportionally long in respect to the rest of the car. Anyway, I don't really want to "trash" the CL as I really am not against it in any way really, in the same way that I am the design details of the new CLS, A, C Coupe, etc. The CL still sits above those as a design to me from M-B..... though, in a weird way, it moves me less and has less character, so go figure.
The current CL is magnificent. What in the world are you all expecting out of a car? Seriously? It's like watching the View...
Current CL is probably the classiest Merc out there. It's SO pure and clean and you guys call it boring. Put some excitement in it and suddenly its "not what a luxury coupe is about".
K/A you're blind. Why do you all get into the worst pics you can find on the internet? How does the CL look on the road? That is all that matters. Sorry, but you guys are blind talking about the CL being unbalanced and what not. The CL is more "balanced" and better looking than the new SL is. Mercedes clearly makes more questionable looking cars than the CL. The CL? Guys you're way off the deep end on that one. M
If there's something I love that's coming from Benz... it's the CL and S-Class... look at that beauty
Even if some pics do not do justice to this car (i.e. non AMG, standard wheels, etc), when you see it in the flesh jaws drop.. This is one magnificent car! What I also like about it is its exclusivity, makes it even more desirable.
