Perhaps you need a reality check to realise the SL is not 'one of the worst looking MB's in history.' ;)

    Oh c'mon, it's waaaay uglier than the 1st gen A-Class. :D

You guys are seriously delusional..you may not "love" the standard SL but the SL63 is just the Shiz.:D
  4. -=Hot|Ice=- Well-Known Member

It really isn't. The SL is a car that will turn heads. It has a presence the old SL didn't have.

Lol. my comment was incredibly tongue in cheek. :D

But as I said before, the A class was an "experiment", and besides, if any, a coupe/roadster is a car where you have to be too stupid to make it wrong. You can take more freedom regarding design vs function unlike a sedan or small hatchback, where function and packaging is everything. (Just compare how gorgeous the Alfa 8C looks, while trying to adapt that design language to the Mito results in utter failure)

I must insist, how Mercedes could get it SO wrong with the SL is beyond any rational thinking.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder my friend.

I know buddy, but there must be something wrong with the SL when almost every review around talks about the looks as a negative point of the car. And just check the reader's comments on those magazines, or youtube or forums arouns the web... not only it doesn't have the universal appraise of the formers SL, but in fact, in many ppl's view, is called plain ugly.

    Regards!

I could say the same thing about the 6ers rear or the 3ers rear. I think both are hideous. The reason we care so much is because we are part of a small group called auto enthusiasts. We knit pick. Overall, the SL has taken the next step in the evolution cycle. I personally think the new SL looks gorgeous.

It might not be the worst but for sure it's one of the worst ;)
Reality check, indeed... and you don't have to thank me :)

Gianclaudio, I agree with you mate :)
I'm glad there are open minded people around here and not only...

Almost a month after this thread was created, I still can't reach a decision on what to vote.

M6: It seems to be a great package. A very nice and politically correct design with a great engine. On the other hand, it's not the shocking car, its predecessor was. The E63 was a love or hate at the first sight car for most people, and I am one of those that fell in love with it, the momment I saw the first photograph. And when I saw it for the first time in real life, I nearly crashed my car, as I just couldn't take my eyes off of it. The E63 was a work of art, in my opinion, and one possibly the best car of the Bangle 1.0 era. A car ahead of its time. I find it sad that noone can say the same for the F12/13. Yes, it's a very nice looking car, possibly a perfect example of a great automotive design, but it's not the headturner the E63 was, and not even a hint as controversial. In a few words, it's too good for its own good. I admire it for its design, but I don't admire it for its impact in the automotive world.

SL63 AMG: I have to admit that it is equiped with tons of new and amazing technologies. But I am not sure that this is what an SL is about. I always saw the SL-series as the epitome of the sports roadster. A classic design with nothing to complain about. A design that screams "this is Mercedes at its best". A design that won't date when the facelift or the next model from MB or BMW comes out. A design that will still look crisp after 20 years. And I don't get this feeling from the current generation SL. At least not as much as the previous SL (the most perfect SL in my eyes) did.

I think that I would most probably prefer a Jaguar XK over those two cars. But the XK isn't perfect either.

In the end, the question is simple: What is this segment about? Technology, driving feel, design, status, or the feeling that you get when you drive a beautiful roadster in a curvy road, holding the steering wheel firmly with both your hands, listening to some good classic rock tunes and having a huge smile on your face?

Nano technology for the windscreen, a politically correct design or a 1080p screen are not what make the difference in this class. It's the combination of feelings that the car gives you.

    :t-cheers:

    That's a pretty good description, Giannis. ;)

Instead of replying myself, let's see how an MB designer might reply:

I don't get his remarks. Is he saying that the R231 is a return to sensuality? Because the R230 is as sensual as it gets, and the R231 looks far more brutal and aggressive, and less clean.

The previous SL was somewhat feminine in it's styling. But what Mercedes has tried to do with the R231 is to instill it with lots of 'hard' surfaces and straight lines that makes it look tone and masculine without being fat or bloat. You can see it from the side where the SL looks quite lean and ground-hugging.

The front end takes some time to get used to because of the very wide grill and the slim headlights that look somewhat awkward in picture. It is actually a continuation of the theme first began in the face-lifted R230. The combination of the wide grill and slim headlights make the car looks flatter, more 'ground-hugging'. The front-end looks like it is chiseled from a block of granite. I actually like the newfound masculinity and chiseled definition of the front end and I am sure it would look much better in person.

Almost every review I've read has commented on how evolutionary and tame the car actually appears. Go figure.
  17. Just_me Well-Known Member

Yeah, some of the reviewers have made some negative notes about the exterior design. I cant recall this happen to previous generation.
  18. klier Member

That means he can't say the SL is butt ugly anymore? It's just like some here keep on going how they find the 6er cabrio ugly?
The way some here are so desperately trying to 'protect' the design of the new SL tells me more than enough....

Also, the SL used to be hot. But now, you can buy an SLS for a couple of grand more than a fully loaded SL. Easy choice really.....or not, 'cause I still have to see the SL with my own eyes. I don't like it in pics, but all that could change in the metal, of course. Still, SLS is the new king in the MB line-up of roadsters.

A good reviewer DOES NOT give his opinion on the design of a car.
Simple. Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one and therefore it's useless to discuss. Saying you like or don't like something is perfectly ok obviously, but going further than that is pointless from my pov
  19. Tarek Well-Known Member

Exactly why i love it..just like the W212 front..so mean and dominant.:)

Yeah, I agree. I do think it's "ok" to express your opinion, but it's more or less worthless to me as a reader. So bottom line... there's no point in giving your opinion in a review.
