Advance sales orders in Germany open today

Following yesterday's leaked photo, Volkswagen has released initial details and photos for the 2012 Tiguan facelift. Furthermore, advance sales orders open today. This behavior is a bit unusual for Europe, however, VW is citing "sustained high demand for the previous model has resulted in it being sold out."

While many of you may ask how that is possible, VW is all too happy to tell us. On 6 January 2011 the German Federal Bureau of Motor Vehicles reported that the bestselling SUV between Hamburg and Munich continues to be the Tiguan. Other contributing reasons for the Tiguan boom are: five stars in EuroNCAP crash testing; wide variety of TDI and TSI engines making it one of the most fuelefficientSUVs; and best overall price-to-performance ratio as confirmed by numerous comparison tests in the automotive media.

"The Tiguan has long been one of the most popular Volkswagens in the world. Its highest volume markets: all of Europe, Russia, USA, China, Brazil and Australia. In Germany, its average market share in the segment of compact SUVs grew to about 21 percent in the year 2010, and across Europe it was twelve percent. Globally, a total of 572,000 Tiguans have been delivered since it was first launched in autumn 2007. The Touareg’s smaller brother is now poised to continue this success story with a new look and advanced technologies."

With a new base price of 24,175 euros in Germany as a Trend & Fun version with 1.4 TSI (90 kW / 122 PS) engine, the price remains the same despite numerous improvements. To find out about these improvements we'll have to wait until its public unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show on March 1st.

Exterior looks great, it compliments the bigger Touareg extremely well now. Only slight disappointment is the interior which appears to have little or no change.

    Press release

HERNDON, Va., March 1, 2011 - Volkswagen of America, Inc. today announced details of the technically and visually enhanced Tiguan, which will make its world debut at the Geneva International Motor Show, March 3 – 13, 2011. The Tiguan's European tuned suspension enables precise handling, while also providing a smooth and compliant ride. With significant improvements to fuel economy, upgrades to the interior and new color options, the 2012 Tiguan exterior now incorporates the Volkswagen family design.

With an anticipated on sale date during the fall of 2011, pricing information for the 2012 Tiguan will be released later this year.

    Exterior
The 2012 Tiguan design stands out more than ever, incorporating the horizontal Volkswagen brand face giving the 2012 Tiguan a modern and sleek look and feel. A redesigned grille featuring two horizontal chrome strips runs between the updated headlights to form a single unit. Striking LED daytime running lights will be available in combination with Bi-XenonTM headlights with AFS (advanced headlight system) on SEL models. Trapezoidal lower air intakes containing the fog light housings, separated by a new center design element, give the 2012 Tiguan a sporty and attractive new look.

A chrome accent along the lower body of the Tiguan will be added to SE and SEL trims, for a sleek and polished look. The taillights for the Tiguan have been redesigned as well. The new and modern tail light design exhibits cues similar to all new VW models-drawing the eye to a striking "double L" pattern.

The 2012 Tiguan will offer a factory-installed 19" wheel option, for the first time. The R GmbH developed "Savannah" alloy wheel and a sport-tuned suspension will be standard on SEL trim level, with the result being a Tiguan SEL with a premium look, and a sporty driving experience.

Pepper Gray will replace Alpine Gray for the 2012 model year, while Night Blue, first offered in 2011, will add depth and color to the palette.

    Interior
All three Tiguan trims will feature interior enhancements. The Tiguan S will offer new high quality cloth seating surfaces in black. The Tiguan SE features Volkswagen's V-Tex leatherette, available in black or beige. Customers interested in the Tiguan SEL will be able to choose from leather seating surfaces with driver memory seat in either black or beige.

    Engine
The fun to drive Tiguan comes with the award winning 2.0-liter TSI® engine that delivers turbocharged acceleration and responsible fuel efficiency. While EPA figures are not yet available, the 2012 Tiguan is expected to deliver noteworthy highway fuel economy improvements from 25 miles per gallon highway to an estimated 29 miles per gallon highway.

    Premium Features
All 2012 Tiguan models will feature standard Bluetooth connectivity, aux-in, power-adjustable heated side view mirrors and six airbags-- helping keep drivers safe while also connected on the road. The 2012 Tiguan comes standard with an eight speaker radio system, and Volkswagen's touch-screen Premium VIII radio will be available on the SE trim level. Also available are two color touch-screen navigation systems, the RNS 315 or the RNS 510 system with a rear-view camera. Top trim levels will feature a Dynaudio® 300 watt sound system.

Nothing extraordinary, but far better looking than the pre-FL model.

That's a good kit. On par with the new X3 in looks.

^ More like on par with a bar of soap.

It's nice, but any form of design is going to take some time to discover...Tiguan's proportions aren't tall that either, it's way too thin and high.

The Tiguan is an exceptionally eye catching design for a VW and is more interesting to the eye than it's Audi counterpart which is more likened to a bar of soap.

For some reason, despite this is a totally politically incorect way to express your feelings about the Tiguan, I nearly fell off my chair laughing. And also, I agree.

The problem with the Tiguan is that it's not enough different from the Golf. And I don't mean it looks-wise. If one looks underneath the car when raised in a VW dealership, and then looks the Golf VI from the angle, it's more than obvious that the two cars share exactly the same underpinnings. It's normal for a car like the Golf to have thin McPherson stut's componets made from aluminum, it's certainly not normal for the Tiguan. Unless it's not an SUV/CUV intended for medium off-road use. Because if it is, then I guarantee that you will have a serious problem with the first good rock you will hit.

Other than that it's fine. But I can't see the point of a so much raised car, if you can't use it off the tarmac. It's reason of existance is marketing, and people who just want a high driving position and the "I drive an SUV" tag. Not my cup of tea.

    :t-cheers:
