Lexus and Lincoln have had the self park tech for a few years also. The reason I referred to the video is because the SL can 'un-park' itself from a spot. I don't think any other manufacturer has this ability yet.
Also, it is the only third-party video where any car having this system actually completes the parking procedure without mishaps. Although, it was given plenty of room to park. Most city parking situation will barely give you two feet oover the length of the car to complete the parking, and this or any system would be left parking for half an hour.
The SL looks crisp and sexy there where in comparison the non-M Pack Vert 6er looks nondescript, bloated and behemoth. The Coupe with M-Pack VS the SL is gonna be fun to gauge which can get the upper hand visually over the other. I sat in an SL today. Very solid, mature and proper interior. The design is nice, reminiscent of other M-B's, and the build quality is OUTSTANDING. I was literally banging buttons and compartments open and close, to try and generate even a little vibration or "stress tests".... these things ALL feel like they're made of iron and welded in place. Very sturdy (the only ones that felt a little flimsy were the door mounted seat adjustments). Closing the door was the same, I slammed it shut several times, and not a vibration in that state of the art chassis or frame. The Dealer people probably were wondering WTF I was doing. Only thing about the interior I didn't like is the A-Pillar material which is the same "decent" plastic that is in my Dad's 2005 CLK Convertible. This is pronounced especially since this car had a staggering $120-130K price tag and should have alcantara at the least in that area. At even the very very least, not sure why they wouldn't use the classier velour material used in other M-B's. The exterior, I like, maybe like a lot, but not sure if or how much I love just yet.
As I suspected the new SL550 puts down about the same numbers as the previous generation SL63 AMG. Thanks for posting the MotorTrend review.
It's a shame really The SL has always been the design in Daimler's arsenal that stood up best to the test of time, because of it's timeless perfection. Then again the SLS AMG is such a good looker, nothing can compare in the looks department form Daimler.
My biggest issue with it so far, is that it's just kind of.... "blah". Like it's lacking some soul that all the previous SL's had.... maybe it's too "plastic", metaphorically speaking? Jury is still out for me, as I haven't even seen one driving yet. I will say, if I had an R230, I would NOT be feeling bad about having a recently turned "previous bodystyle" right now.
Well all that the new Mercedes-Benz SL needs is a new set of wheels! It sets the car off and really brings it to a new level, nothing more than wheels and lowering and all the things you mentioned here are gone!
Cars.com Tests New iPhone Maps App in a Mercedes-Benz SL550From a performance standpoint, both apps match up pretty well, which is a great accomplishment given that Apple said it built its mapping system from scratch. But after all that work, it still looks like a prettier version of the Google app.We will have to wait until we test Siri's functionality, but neither app delivered many results in a search for "gas station." "Gas" and "Find gas station" returned fewer results and took a lot of time to deliver them. And as the nav system in the Mercedes reminded us, voice prompts updated as you move are extremely helpful in keeping your eyes where they should be — on the road and not a 3.5-inch screen, even if it is a Retina display.Maps for iOS 6 doesn't bring the iPhone closer to a GPS device; at this stage, it's more of an iterative improvement that will make current users happier. It won't replace your nav system, certainly not one surrounded by the SL.http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/...new-iphone-maps-in-a-mercedes-benz-sl550.html
I would hardly decribe the new SL as a disaster. It is am imposing car in person. Much more than the last. I like the overall shape a lot. In fact I find it flows very well. The lights are a little distracting. They fit much better in person than in pictures. The angled photos don't capture the upright front well at all.
