I'm very picky and critical of M-B keeping up their Premium value here, as well. However, maybe it's because I always saw big Trucks, and Vans, etc. randomly with a Star on the grille, when I was younger, and thought it was pretty cool, that it doesn't bother me so much. I'd prefer they didn't maybe display them on the regular lots (keep them in their own little bay or something), but it doesn't bug me all that much. Lots of U.S customers will certainly use that against the brand.... "What? M-B makes VANS now?", etc.

Mercedes-Benz Manhattan introduces the Grand Edition. (y)

    Ultimate Mercedes-Benz or Stand-Up Maybach?

    Mercedes-Benz of Manhattan

The custom-built Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Grand Edition is equipped with massaging seats, 32-inch flat-panel monitors and a WiFi network.

On Saturday afternoon, holiday shoppers were perusing models on the showroom floor of Mercedes-Benz Manhattan on Park Avenue. A few blocks away were a Ferrari-Maserati dealership and the Audi Forum to tempt them. But more than a few were captivated instead by a huge, whalelike black vehicle sporting a red bow on its nose and seeming to scrape the dealer’s ceiling — the Sprinter Grand Edition.

“We are the only place where you can buy this,” said Vincent Varga, a sales representative for the dealership. “We have sold four of them.”

Mr. Varga said the Grand Edition is offered exclusively by Mercedes-Benz Manhattan, a company-owned dealer, and is custom-built. The main cabin combines the comforts of home and the conveniences of an office. (The dealership compares it to the cabin of a private jet.) The vehicle has its own Wi-Fi network and two 32-inch flat-panel monitors. Driver and passenger seats come with heat and massage features. Behind them are four reclining captain’s chairs. The interior walls and carpet have the look and feel of warm camel. For further entertainment, there are CD and DVD players, as well as iPod and video game connections. A 30,000-B.T.U. climate control system heats or cools the rear, and an air-ride system smooths out bumps.

“Some people call it the stand-up Maybach,” said Mr. Varga, referencing Mercedes-Benz’s ultraluxurious sedan marque. Priced at $189,850, the Sprinter Grand Edition may indeed be this year’s ultimate Mercedes.

The basic Sprinter is available in several configurations. There are two different wheelbases and two heights. Passenger versions are priced around $40,000, while cargo versions begin as low as $36,000.

Sprinters typically find employment hauling freight and shuttling workers, so Mercedes recently added a crew-van model to its line, while private converters often turn out wide-body versions for use as shuttle buses. Customizing Sprinters for R.V. duty has also grown in recent years.

Airstream, Winnebago and other well-known companies offer their own versions of the Sprinter. A custom, Dodge-branded version was featured on TLC’s now-canceled “Jon & Kate Plus 8″ reality show.

For all its weighty, high-tech features, the Grand Edition is still powered by the standard 3-liter turbodiesel V-6 that powers most Sprinters, which produces all of 188 horsepower.

Mercedes on Track to Double Sprinter Van Sales

    By Herb Shuldiner WardsAuto.com

NEW YORK – Sprinter commercial van sales have continued to accelerate in the U.S. since Mercedes-Benz took over the exclusive distribution of the diesel-powered vehicles, says Claus Tritt, general manager-commercial vehicles.

The Sprinter is being distributed by 108 of Mercedes' 353 dealers and 58 Freightliner truck outlets.

The van formerly was badged as a Dodge and sold by Chrysler before its tie-up with Fiat.

“The sales network is growing every day,” a spokesman says. There were about 8,600 Sprinters sold in 2010, Tritt tells Ward’s.

“Our goal is to more than double sales this year. We're well on our way to doing that.”

Ward’s data shows Sprinter U.S. deliveries through May totaled 5,185 units, a 102.1% gain on year-ago.

Competitors include the Ford Econoline and Chevrolet Express.

Tritt says there are 24 option packages available to Sprinter buyers, as well as 200 single options.

Sales of passenger-van versions are starting to take off as shuttle services embrace the product, which is based at $39,000.

Mercedes-parent Daimler sells the smaller Viano and Vito vans in Europe. But Tritt says there are no immediate plans to bring either of those models to the U.S. in order to enlarge the Mercedes van portfolio.

“Our job is to be profitable, so we're evaluating every avenue (to expand),” he says.

“When it's going to happen I don't know, but there's always an opportunity to enlarge a franchise.”

Daimler’s 2010 deal with Renault will see the French auto maker provide Mercedes in Europe with a version of its Kangoo delivery van in 2012.

The emphasis on fuel economy in the U.S. eventually could translate into an opportunity to bring the smaller vans, Tritt adds. “It's something to explore.”

    Arobus-Produces-Mercedes-Benz-Sprinter-Number-11111.jpg

11,111th Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Produced by Arobus

As perhaps the world’s best-selling van, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is truly in great demand. It’s used for a wide range of purposes and represents the automaker’s commitment to quality and reliability. That’s why it’s also important to have reliable partners when it comes to making Sprinter variants. Recently, Tuzia, Turkey-based minibus body manufacturer and Mercedes-Benz partner Arobus produced its 11,111th Sprinter, a testament to the successful partnership between the two entities.

The partnership started 5 years ago, and the initial order was 250 units. Arobus now produces six different minibus variants of the Sprinter, and the manufacturer’s production is now pegged at around 5,000 units annualy. The majority of the units are intended for schoolbus or taxi use.

This massive scale is facilitated by the Mercedes-Benz Vans Body Manufacturer Center, which is located in Istanbul. Services are provided to the various Mercedes-Benz partners, and the partners or manufacturers then update the center about all the conversions and production details.

“We’re very pleased by the trust Arobus places in the Sprinter,” said Body Manufacturer Center chief Michael Pflüger. “Our joint success demonstrates the tremendous opportunities offered by the extensive co-operation between Mercedes-Benz Vans and the body manufacturers.”
