Re: 2008 Gol (NF) News Thread [includes spyhots] (update1) Don't forget the current VW Fox, the Lupo's replacement, was designed, engineered and it is built in Brazil. The Brazilian Fox is available with a 1.0 4-Cylinder 8 Valve Flexible-fuel engine and a flexible-fuel 1.6. Brazilians developed a sort of pseudo-SUV based on the Fox. It's called the CrossFox. It's only available with front-wheel-drive and it is powered by the 1.6 from the Golf MkIV. Only Brazilians managed to convert the engine into a flexible-fuel unit that works both on petrol or alcohol or even a mix of the two. The engine is capable to produce 104 Bhp running on petrol and 112 Bhp when running on alcohol. Brazil has the only Volkswagen Styling Centre in South America. Therefore you shouldn't be surprised to find out they are developing their own car for their own market. Brazilians also were the responsible for the Polo Sedan. Speaking of which, here it is the Polo Sedan with the 2006 Polo face-lift front-end: The Brazilian Polo is available as a 5-door Hatchback or 4-door Saloon and engine choices are the 1.6 TotalFlex (the one quoted above) and the old 2.0 8 Valve 116 Bhp unit from the U.S Spec Jetta MkIV; no Automatic transmission available not even as an optional extra, though. I have to say, I quite like the looks of that Polo Sedan above. It looks really classy for a small saloon. I would suggest the "normal" Polo, but since Americans don't care about Hatchbacks, I reckon Volkswagen should sell the Polo Sedan in North America as a cheaper alternative to the Rabbit and as a rival for the Chevrolet Aveo Sedan.
Re: 2008 Gol (NF) News Thread [includes spyhots] (update1) Actually VW South Africa launched the facelift Polo sedan 1st then Shanghai VW released their version with different rear ends which the Brazilian model inherited.

Next Generation VW Gol Is Caught With Little Disguise Volkswagen Gol has been the bestselling car in Brazil for more than 20 years. Exported and built in other emerging countries, such as Russia, China and Mexico, where it has reached number one in sale charts in 2006, the car is also known as Pointer. No wonder it’s next generation, the third one (although Volkswagen calls it the fifth), is considered to be one of the most important launches for this year in South America. Many magazines, such as AutoEsporte, have already anticipated the appearance of the car based on insiders' information, but Quatro Roads has been the first one to spot it in road tests, as you can see in the pictures in this article. Besides these images, Quatro Rodas has also worked on some renderings for its June issue that show the front end and the rear of the car. VW Tiguan is said to have inspired the new compact hatchback, significantly enhanced when compared to the previous model. While the new car uses the PQ24 platform, also shared by VW Fox and VW Polo, the new Gol will feature a transversely mounted engine for the first time in its history. All the previous versions had longitudinally mounted engines, a very unusual solution for small cars. This characteristic made Gol be at the same time one of garage owners’ favourite cars, because it was easy to fix, and reputed to be too old compared to the competition. The sedan version of the car, called Voyage in Brazil and exported to the USA as Fox from 1987 to 1993, will get back in line with the new car. Though compact sedans are not very popular in Europe or in the USA, they account for a large amount of sales in emerging countries due to their more affordable prices. This helps explain the launch of the sedan version of the Peugeot 206 in Brazil, but not the fact it will be called 207 Brasil Passion in that country… worldcarfans
"It's coming". A hugely important car for Volkswagen in South-America. The Gol is the best selling car in Brazil for 21 years and this is the second major re-styling the Gol will go through. The first major re-styling was in 1994. The biggest difference the Gol NF will have to its predecessors, will be the change of the current Forward mounted engine layout which has been carried on since the first generation of the Gol was introduced in 1980, to the Sideways mounted engine layout for more interior space. The car also grew a few more inches in length, width, height and for the first time: The Gol will be a worldwide car. And that means the whole structure of the car had to be re-enforced in order to pass the feared EuroNCAP crash-test; Finally after 28 years of life, the Gol will get crumple zones, side-impact bars and VW announced that ABS brakes, front and side Air-bags will be available, as optional extras, though.
With all of VWs specialized vehicles around the world, not to mention their factories, you really realize that the American market just kind of an afterthought. Which is a shame because it's a huge market that they could capitalize on. Especially now as many Americans are beginning to wake up from their slumber with gas prices through the roof..
No, more to do with the Polo this time round. Previous versions used Audi/Passat components and had a north-south engine layout. The Gol is between Fox and Polo in size but marketed beneath them due to age.
