Mercedes CL 500

(The CL is essentially an S-Class with two doors. Technology and engines all come from its 4-door stablemate. Like a bodybuilder dressed in black, the 5 meter long and 1.87 meter wide CL attracts a lot of attention.)

(Despite this, the CL is a gentle car with generous interior space and a very high quality cockpit a la S-Class. Among the big coupes, there is no other which offers this much interior space. The seats are well sculpted, not to mention comfortable, and the leg and head space at the rear is very much acceptable. Getting into the rear seats is a little annoying and time consuming though since the front seats have to be moved electronically - and this takes time.)

(Unlike the S-Class, the CL is more of a "driver's car". Despite this, a little S-Class influence can never hurt and this means the interior controls function like those of the S-Class. It might take sometime for the driver to know all the systems of the car (the instruction manual is 520 pages long). Some of the controls, especially in the LCD display are a little difficult to understand. The CL offers a lot of options such as infrared Night Assist and Distronic Plus as well PARKING ASSIST with a rear monitoring camera, should the driver desire it.)

(Despite all this technology, the driver shouldn't be afraid. In real life, the systems are user friendly and reliable and the driver still has to brake, steer and operate the gas pedal - which in the CL are fun. Those looking for a light sports car to take on the sharpest corners are looking at the wrong car though.)

(Still, it is not everyday that you get to drive a 2-ton car that handles with ease and feels so playful. You can take sharp corners with this car - and the steering is pretty direct too. Should you take a curve too quickly, the CL will understeer gently and taking your foot of the gas is safe enough, as the ESP has everything under control.)

(Where the CL500 reigns supreme however is the cruising factor with 388-hp on tap that are channeled to the rear wheels via 7Gtronic. This is aided by the comfortable, refined and quietness of the cars systems. The CL masters this - like an S-Class.)

FAZIT - AUTOZEITUNG
(Aside from the high price tag, there is little to criticize about this car. Almost no other car combines the comfort and high-tech of a luxury limousine with the dynamic performance of a large coupe. Basically, the CL is a two-door S-Class, yet a little more unpractical and with a bigger price. Is the CL500 almost overkill? You decide. Fact is, it is a wonderful indulgence for our short lives.)

Forgot to add, I love that interior color combination!

Reminds me of the Pianolacquer option for the Maybach 57S.

EDIT: Forgot to add this:

0-100 km/h in 5.7 seconds

Such a beautiful car!
I'm suprised about the fuel efficiency of the car.
I don't know if it's correct or not but for its size and performance this CL500 only consumes 9.9 L / 100 km in this test. Which is like 24 MPG for the American folks and 28 MPG for the people in the UK.
That is relatively low for such a car.

I think this generation of CL will become a classic Mercedes. The car is almost flawless.

This Designo interior is stunning! The quality has improved tremendously compared to the previous CL: not only the layout and the design of the switches is much nicer, but most of all the materials that are used are at the level where they should be in this type of Mercedes The exterior is bolder than the previous generation, while, IMHO, I think the previous CL was a little more classy and sharp looking. Of course, today, it looks a bit dated, but at the time of its launch, it truely was a remarkable car!

I agree. It has lost some of the uprightness typical of older Mercedes, but it is much "prettier" now.

That is a really, really low figure. They must have done a lot of highway driving.

Could be. But then again, MB could also have overinflated their fuel economy figures for legal reasons.

For example, Mercedes said that our E320 (224-hp V6) will need around 12 L / 100 km. However, in the mix, we regularly get around 8.2 L - 9.3 L / 100 km and this includes driving sporty.
